Cardiology - Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Consultant Cardiologist to join a large, growing cardiology department in the South West. This permanent post focuses primarily on non-interventional cardiology, with a strong emphasis on Heart Failure, cardiac devices, and general cardiology, across inpatient and outpatient settings.
This role is suitable for applicants with broad cardiology training who are committed to high-quality, patient-centred cardiac care. Applicants wishing to work part-time or job-share are also welcome.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
The post holder will:
- Deliver comprehensive non-interventional cardiology services, including Heart Failure and device management.
- Provide consultant-led inpatient care on the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiology wards.
- Take part in the general cardiology ward service, reviewing new referrals and managing outlying cardiology patients as required.
- Participate in the Cardiology Consultant of the Week (COW) rota, including:
- Daily review of referrals from Acute Medicine, Emergency Department and other wards.
- Oversight and support to the Cardiology SpR team and specialist nurses.
- Provision of afternoon clinical cover for CCU & CIU (Tue–Fri).
- Take part in weekend ward rounds on a 1:6 or 1:7 rota, covering cardiology inpatients and acute referrals.
- Contribute to cath lab sessions, outpatient clinics, MDTs and clinical administration, depending on skills and experience.
- Support rapid assessment pathways, including urgent cardiology reviews and advice to clinical teams across the hospital.
There is no general medical on-call commitment, and non-interventional cardiologists are not part of the interventional on-call rota.
Teaching, Training & Development
The successful candidate will:
- Teach and supervise junior doctors, SpRs, and speciality trainees.
- Take part in undergraduate teaching for medical students from regional universities.
- Participate in appraisal, mentoring and professional development activities.
- Support education programmes and contribute to departmental learning.
The department provides excellent secretarial, IT, and educational facilities, including dedicated office space, structured CPD, and mentoring support.
Clinical Governance & Quality
The post holder will:
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement projects and national cardiac audits.
- Support safe, high-quality cardiology services aligned with national standards.
- Contribute to service evaluation, pathway development and performance monitoring.
- Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses and allied health professionals.
Specialist Nursing Support
You will work closely with three established cardiology specialist nursing teams:
- Heart Failure Specialist Nurses – independent prescribers providing inpatient and outpatient HF services, rapid access clinics and MDT support.
- Chest Pain Specialist Nurses – supporting ACS assessment, rapid access chest pain clinics and acute reviews.
- Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses – delivering inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programmes.
These services play a vital role in patient flow, outpatient care and cross-departmental communication.
Junior Medical Team
You will work with:
- Cardiology SpRs (training and trust grades)
- Core trainees and foundation doctors
The team provides support for referrals, ward activity and acute reviews.
Continuing Professional Development & Revalidation
You will be expected to:
- Maintain GMC revalidation requirements
- Participate in annual appraisal
- Engage in CPD aligned with RCP guidelines
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- MRCP or equivalent
- On the GMC Specialist Register for Cardiology (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at interview)
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Desirable
- Higher academic degree (MD, PhD)
Experience
Essential
- Contemporary experience in general and acute cardiology
- Competency in bradycardia pacing and complex device management
Desirable
- Experience in teaching, medical education or supervision
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and governance
- Completion of management or leadership training
Knowledge & Skills

- Strong clinical judgement with broad cardiology expertise
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to assess and manage complex cardiac cases
- Proficiency in cardiology IT systems (e.g., PACS, cardiology databases)
