An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced, highly motivated Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) to join a dynamic Emergency Department team in the North West region. The successful applicant will lead the Paediatric Emergency Medicine service, act as the departmental lead for child protection, and play a central role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate emergency care for children and young people.
This role is open to full-time or part-time applicants and offers significant scope for leadership, service development, teaching, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Primary Duties of the Role
Clinical Responsibilities
The post holder will:
- Provide rapid assessment, diagnosis, resuscitation, and initial treatment for paediatric emergencies.
- Deliver high-quality clinical decision-making to ensure safe, timely and effective care.
- Lead the paediatric emergency service and support the wider Emergency Department team in managing critically ill or injured children.
- Act as Lead Clinician for Child Protection within the department, ensuring safeguarding standards are maintained.
- Work closely with the Nurse Coordinator to support communication, patient flow, and safe discharge pathways.
- Liaise effectively with paediatric specialities including medical, surgical, orthopaedic and critical care teams, as well as clinical partners across the wider regional network.
Education, Training and Teaching
A significant component of the role is departmental education. The Consultant will:
- Ensure robust PEM teaching and training for all doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
- Coordinate paediatric resuscitation training and simulation sessions.
- Provide high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ensure adequate supervision of junior staff, including compliance with the European Working Time Directive.
- Support a rich learning culture through grand rounds, departmental teaching, and continued professional development activities.

Leadership, Governance & Management
The post holder will:
- Attend and contribute to Clinical Governance meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
- Take on leadership responsibilities to support departmental standards, patient outcomes and continuous improvement.
- Participate in audit, quality assurance and service evaluation programmes.
- Maintain professional standards as required by the GMC and follow all policies, protocols and safeguarding regulations.
- Contribute to effective departmental administration, including supporting efficient and timely patient flow in line with local and national performance standards.
- Work with clinical and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the department, to resolve issues impacting service delivery.
- Participate in revalidation processes, multisource feedback and reflective practice.
The role also requires awareness and appropriate action regarding the Major Incident Plan.
Additional Responsibilities
The Consultant will also:
- Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure high-quality documentation.
- Delegate tasks appropriately and ensure safe oversight of junior staff.
- Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues where practical and within the scope of competence.
- Support the clinical development of the team through leadership, mentorship and professional role modelling.
- Maintain essential clinical skills and participate in relevant mandatory training.
Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
Essential
- Primary medical qualification (e.g., MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC Registration
- FCEM, FRCA, FRCS, MRCP or equivalent
- On the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
- Significant post-qualification experience in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
- Evidence of CT1–CT3 ACCS competencies or equivalent 36 months of training across relevant specialities
- PEM subspecialist qualification through RCEM or RCPCH
- ALS, EPALS/APLS, ATLS/ETC
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
