Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced Emergency Medicine Consultants to join a growing, forward-thinking Accident & Emergency service in the South East region. This role supports ongoing service development within two Emergency Departments and forms a key part of a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred emergency care.
The post holders will contribute to the continued improvement of urgent and emergency services by providing senior clinical leadership across busy departments managing high-acuity, high-complexity cases.
Role Purpose
The Consultant will assist in delivering high-quality emergency care while contributing to the strategic development of the speciality. The role involves clinical leadership, governance participation, teaching, and collaborative service improvement across both Emergency Departments.
The post holder will be based at a single primary site, with cross-site cover as required.
Key Responsibilities of the Post
Clinical Duties
- Deliver senior decision-making and Consultant-led care across primary, minor, resuscitation, and paediatric areas.
- Provide cross-cover for essential services during consultant leave periods.
- On rare occasions, provide cover for the second site when operationally required.
- Ensure timely review, safe patient flow, and high clinical standards.
- Support multidisciplinary care pathways, including trauma, acute medicine, paediatrics, and surgical emergencies.
Governance, Quality & Safety
- Participate actively in clinical governance, incident review, morbidity & mortality meetings, and risk management.
- Lead and supervise departmental audit projects in alignment with speciality audit leads.
- Participate in national audits, service evaluations, and outcome reviews.
- Maintain high standards of CME/CPD in line with professional and GMC requirements.
Teaching & Training
- Provide regular clinical teaching to medical students, junior doctors, and AHPs.
- Participate in simulation sessions, skills teaching, and departmental education programmes.
- Act as an Educational Supervisor (training required within 12 months if not already completed).
- Support trainees' professional development and contribute to undergraduate clinical placements.
Research & Academic Activity
- Engage in relevant research projects and support academic collaboration with local universities.
- Encourage and support trainee involvement in research and audit.
Service Development & Management
- Work with senior colleagues and divisional management to develop modern models of emergency care.
- Contribute to service redesign, urgent care improvements, and integrated emergency pathways.
- Support workforce planning, rota development, and departmental resource optimisation.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in emergency care.
Conditions of Service
- Applicable to Consultant Medical and Dental Terms & Conditions.
- Part-time applicants are welcome; a modified job plan will be agreed upon where appropriate.
- Complete the job plan to be agreed upon within one month of the appointment.
- Consultants may be required to live within a reasonable distance of their base site, unless otherwise agreed.
- Annual leave entitlement is 32 days per year; leave must be requested with 8 weeks’ notice.
- Mandatory training and compliance with local policies are required.
Special Responsibilities
- Active participation in appraisal and annual personal development planning.
- Contribution to CPD activities, including study leave (10 days/year or 30 days/3 years).
- Commitment to teaching, supporting, and supervising junior medical staff.
- Ensure safe clinical practice through good communication, documentation, and availability to clinical teams.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine (or equivalent).
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Additional higher qualifications.
Training & Experience
Essential
- Broad and demonstrable experience across the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine.
- Valid provider certifications:
- ALS
- ATLS
- Paediatric Life Support (APLS or EPLS)
Desirable
- Experience in Acute Medicine.
- Additional speciality courses or instructor status (ALS/ATLS/APLS Instructor).
Management & Administrative Skills
Essential
- Understanding of NHS management structures.
- Knowledge of clinical governance principles.
Desirable
- Formal management training or qualifications.
Audit, Research & Publications
Essential
- Strong working knowledge of medical audit principles.
- Evidence of completed audits and implementation of improvements.
- Understanding of research methodology and its role in emergency care.
Desirable
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
