An excellent opportunity has arisen for three Consultant Anaesthetists to join a large, well-established and forward-thinking Anaesthetics department in the Yorkshire and Humber region. This is a major, highly respected service with a strong clinical, academic and training profile. The department prides itself on delivering high-quality perioperative care, supporting a wide range of surgical specialities, and fostering a supportive, team-centred culture.

You will be joining a substantial consultant body with diverse subspecialty interests and a strong commitment to education, service development, and innovation. The post offers flexibility, opportunities to explore and expand your clinical interests, and the chance to contribute to high-quality anaesthetic and perioperative services across multiple sites.

Primary Duties of the Role

Clinical Responsibilities

The three Consultant Anaesthetist posts each offer broad general anaesthetic practice with the opportunity to develop subspecialty interests in areas such as:

  • Vascular Anaesthesia
  • Neurosurgery
  • Upper GI Surgery
  • Gynae-oncology
  • Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Perioperative Medicine
  • Pre-assessment

You will provide:

  • Consultant-led anaesthetic services across both main sites within the organisation
  • Participation in a 1 in 24 on-call rota providing cover for CEPOD theatres
  • Supervision and training of the full range of anaesthetic trainees and fellows
  • Senior decision-making for complex cases and perioperative management
  • Active involvement in patient safety, audit, and department-wide governance

Your job plan will be agreed with the department and reviewed annually, with scope to tailor your weekly timetable around your subspecialty interests and departmental requirements.

On-Call Commitments

  • Participation in the 1:24 CEPOD on-call rota, providing acute anaesthetic cover for emergency theatres
  • On-call duties will require flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies.
  • You will work collaboratively with surgical teams, critical care, theatres, and emergency departments to ensure safe and efficient patient flow.

Education, Training & Supervision

As part of a large teaching service, you will:

  • Supervise CT1–ST7 trainees, Senior Clinical Fellows, and Anaesthesia Associates.
  • Contribute to training programmes for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in simulation training, teaching days, and departmental educational activities.
  • Support Foundation Doctors during their Intensive Care and perioperative rotations

A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring is expected.

Governance, Quality & Service Development

You will be expected to:

  • Engage in quality improvement, audit, risk management, and clinical governance
  • Support safe practice in theatres and anaesthesia departments
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings and theatre utilisation reviews
  • Contribute to ongoing redesign and optimisation of perioperative pathways
  • Play an active role in departmental strategy and service development

There is ample scope to introduce new clinical pathways, develop specialist services, and contribute to long-term planning.

Research & Innovation

The department encourages:

  • Participation in clinical trials
  • Quality improvement projects
  • Collaborative academic work
  • Development of specialist areas such as perioperative medicine, airway management, major GI anaesthesia, or vascular services

Consultants with existing or future research interests will be supported.

Person Specification

Qualifications — Essential

  • FRCA (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience as an Anaesthetist

Desirable

  • MD, PhD, or postgraduate qualification in Education or Management

Clinical Skills — Essential

  • Demonstrable high-level training and competence across all relevant general anaesthetic techniques
  • Broad experience supporting a range of surgical subspecialties
  • ALS, ATLS and APLS provider
  • Ability to work independently and safely within emergency, elective and CEPOD settings

Desirable

  • Special Interest in Anaesthesia (SIA) in:
    • Neuro-anaesthesia
    • Vascular anaesthesia
    • Major GI surgery
    • Perioperative medicine
    • Airway, ENT, Head and Neck anaesthesia

Teaching, Training & Leadership — Essential

  • Experience supervising and training junior doctors
  • Ability to provide senior leadership in a busy theatre environment
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
