An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic and forward-thinking Acute and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service in the South East region. This role is ideal for an ambitious clinician who is committed to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate acute care while shaping service development across the emergency floor.
You will join a supportive multidisciplinary team that promotes best practices in emergency medical admissions, patient flow, and admission-avoidance pathways. The service is committed to flexible working arrangements to encourage work–life balance and support career sustainability.
Primary Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive consultant-led care within the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), a modern 24-bed area located within the emergency floor.
- Lead daily consultant ward rounds (morning and afternoon), ensuring timely senior clinical decision-making.
- Participate in multidisciplinary board rounds, with in-reach support for specialities and collaborative patient management.
- Supervise and manage SDEC services, overseeing direct referrals from primary care, Urgent Care, and the Emergency Department.
- Support step-down pathways and assist with admission avoidance initiatives.
On-Call Commitments
- Contribute to the Medicine on-call rota (currently 1 in 11 on weekday nights and 1 in 11 on Saturday).
- Participate in the Acute Medicine weekend rota (1 in 7 weekends on AAU).
- Be present in the South East region when on call.
Education & Workforce Development
- Provide leadership and supervision to junior medical staff.
- Contribute to the development and expansion of Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) roles.
- Deliver postgraduate teaching and support continuous professional development within the team.
Service Development & Leadership
- Collaborate with Emergency Care to deliver responsive in-reach services and timely reviews of medical patients.
- Promote early senior decision-making to improve patient outcomes and patient flow.
- Engage actively in service planning, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance activities.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT at interview)
- Completion of recognised training in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Desirable:
- Higher degree (MD/PhD)
- CCT in Acute Internal Medicine
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Demonstrable experience and high-level competence in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Ability to take full, independent responsibility for patient care
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within clinical and non-clinical teams
- IT literacy
- Understanding of current NHS priorities and pressures
- Commitment to delivering efficient, high-quality, cost-effective services
Desirable:
- Experience running a Medical Assessment Unit
- Experience in acute medical service development
- Knowledge of Enhanced Recovery pathways
- Current driving licence
Audit, Teaching & Research
Essential:
- Participation in clinical audits relevant to Acute Medicine
- Experience delivering postgraduate teaching
Desirable:
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Completed management or communications courses
- Evidence of quality improvement or service innovation
Additional Requirements
- Eligibility to work in the UK with an appropriate immigration status
- Availability within the South East region when on-call commitments require
