An established NHS service in the South East is seeking a full-time Consultant Haematologist to join its dynamic, patient-centred Haematology and Blood Transfusion team.

This role involves providing a comprehensive haematology service, contributing to departmental development, and maintaining high standards of diagnostic and clinical care. The post holder will join a friendly and collaborative team working towards full UKAS accreditation, with opportunities to develop sub-speciality interests and participate in teaching, audit, and service innovation.

Flexible working arrangements are available, supporting work-life balance through part-time or compressed hours where possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical haematology care, including outpatient, day case, and inpatient services.
  • Provide expert advice on haematology investigations, anticoagulation, and blood transfusion to hospital and primary-care clinicians.
  • Participate in and help lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings in collaboration with regional network partners.
  • Support and supervise haematology patients undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments.
  • Lead and teach within the Hospital Transfusion Committee, providing clinical governance input.
  • Engage in clinical audit, research, and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Contribute to training programmes for junior doctors, scientists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in a 1-in-4 on-call rota (supported by regional colleagues).

About the Department

The Haematology department forms part of a fully refurbished, purpose-built Pathology service located within the main hospital complex. The Blood Sciences division, which includes Haematology and Blood Transfusion, operates within a modern open-plan laboratory and holds full ISO 15189 UKAS accreditation.

Close clinical partnerships exist with major regional centres across the Wessex Haematology Network, providing opportunities for collaboration, research, and specialist case discussion. The service manages Level 1 Haematology cases, with referral pathways in place for tertiary-level care at partner hospitals.

The team comprises biomedical scientists, Specialist Nurses, and Consultant colleagues who share a strong ethos of teamwork and mutual support.

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements

  • Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Inclusion on, or eligibility for, the Specialist Register in Haematology within six months of interview.
  • At least one year of NHS experience in a relevant setting.
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality clinical care, with strong communication and leadership skills.

Desirable

  • MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Experience in service development, teaching, or research.
  • Sub-speciality interest that complements existing departmental expertise.
