An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Gastroenterology with General (Internal) Medicine to join a progressive and expanding Gastroenterology department in the South West region. This post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a well-established team delivering high-quality care and innovative gastroenterology services across a growing network.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care in Gastroenterology and General Medicine.
  • Undertake general gastroenterology clinics and perform upper and lower GI endoscopy procedures.
  • Lead inpatient care for gastroenterology wards on a rotational basis.
  • Participate in emergency endoscopy and acute on-call rotas as required.
  • Support the development of specialist gastroenterology services and pathways across the department.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure high standards of clinical care, teaching, and audit.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement projects to maintain service excellence.
  • Contribute to research, training, and educational activities within the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Desirable:

  • Higher academic qualification (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Evidence of sub-specialist interest complementing departmental expertise

Experience

Essential:

  • Broad and thorough training in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
  • Independent competency in colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and GI bleed management
  • Experience managing inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology caseloads
  • Involvement in audit and quality improvement initiatives

Desirable:

  • Experience in teaching and supervision of trainees or medical students
  • Experience in research or peer-reviewed publications
  • Management or leadership experience within a clinical team
