Clinical Oncology - Consultant
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Consultant Clinical Oncologist to join a dynamic and expanding oncology department in the North West region of England.
This is a full-time, permanent position (10 Programmed Activities) with an on-call supplement. Applications are also welcome from candidates who wish to work part-time or flexibly, with some responsibilities available to be carried out remotely.
The oncology service is the lead provider for adult radiotherapy and systemic therapy across Lancashire and South Cumbria, serving a population of approximately 1.8 million. The department delivers comprehensive cancer care, including advanced radiotherapy and chemotherapy services, in collaboration with several NHS organisations in the region.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive clinical oncology service, working collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Deliver high-quality Oncology expertise in the management and development of site-specific cancer services.
- Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota and provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave.
- Work closely with surgeons, physicians, and specialists across multiple departments to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, providing clinical guidance and leadership.
- Participate in teaching, training, and examination activities, contributing to local and national postgraduate education.
- Engage in clinical audit, appraisal, and continuous professional development to maintain and improve standards of practice.
- Take part in research and service development projects to enhance patient outcomes and support innovation in oncology care.

- Support the design and delivery of oncology pathways and protocols across the region.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- CCT (or equivalent) in Clinical Oncology, or within six months of completion at the time of interview.
- Must be entered on (or eligible for) the Specialist Register for Clinical Oncology at the time of appointment.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience is required.
Desirable
- Higher academic or educational degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
- Formal management or leadership training.
Experience & Skills
- Broad experience in clinical oncology, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance and evidence-based practice.
- Proven teaching and supervisory experience with junior doctors and trainees.
- Effective communication and organisational skills.
Desirable
- Experience with stereotactic radiotherapy techniques.
- Evidence of research involvement, publications, or significant audit projects.
