Gastroenterology - Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and skilled Consultant in Gastroenterology to join a dynamic and expanding team in the South West Region. This role involves providing high-quality care and diagnostic services to patients with a wide range of gastroenterological conditions across two well-equipped hospital sites.
The department has established subspecialty interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology, Nutrition, Capsule Endoscopy, and Functional GI Disorders, with JAG-accredited endoscopy services available across both sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services.
- Diagnose and manage patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.
- Lead and participate in specialised gastroenterology service delivery and development.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
- Participate in endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings and collaborate with colleagues across departments.
- Take part in the Gastroenterology on-call rota as required.
- Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support and participate in medical education and research activities within the department.
Department Overview
The Gastroenterology Department serves as the regional centre for Upper GI Cancer, Hepatobiliary and Colorectal Cancer, and non-transplant Hepatology. The department includes:
- A dedicated 36-bed Gastroenterology Ward
- Two JAG-accredited Endoscopy Units with 10 procedure rooms in total
- Facilities offering advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
There are opportunities to develop specialist interests in research and teaching, supported by strong academic links with regional medical institutions.
Requirements
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Entry on the Specialist Register in General Medicine and Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of achieving CCT)
- Demonstrated clinical experience equivalent to UK CCST level in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
- Experience in clinical audit and service improvement
Desirable
- Higher academic qualification (MD/PhD or equivalent)
- Experience in teaching and training of medical students or junior doctors
- Research or publications in gastroenterology or related subspecialties
- Subspecialty interest that complements existing departmental expertise
