Cellular Pathology - Consultant
Apply nowThe Cellular Pathology department delivers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, including histopathology, cytopathology, and autopsy work. The team is dedicated to maintaining high standards of diagnostic accuracy, rapid turnaround times, and innovation in line with UKAS accreditation and ISO standards.
The department is staffed by an experienced group of Consultant Pathologists, supported by scientific, technical, and administrative teams, working collaboratively to ensure consistent delivery of safe and efficient pathology services. The team is also actively involved in training, research, and digital pathology initiatives, reflecting its strong academic and developmental ethos.
About the Role
The post holder will play a key role in providing a comprehensive Cellular Pathology diagnostic service, including:
- Surgical specimen cut-up and reporting
- Cytopathology and frozen section work
- Participation in workload allocation and internal cover rotas
- Attendance at multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
- Contribution to service development, research, and governance activities
There are opportunities for the successful candidate to develop a subspecialty interest that complements the existing team and to take on Clinical Lead responsibilities within a supportive 10–12 PA job plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a high-quality diagnostic service across all areas of histopathology and cytopathology.
- Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, ensuring effective clinical communication and decision-making.
- Participate in quality assurance programmes, audits, and clinical governance activities in line with national standards.
- Support the development and maintenance of UKAS accreditation and participation in NEQAS schemes.
- Provide teaching and supervision to medical students, trainees, and scientific staff, fostering a strong culture of learning.
- Engage in service development, innovation, and digital pathology initiatives to improve efficiency and diagnostic outcomes.
- Maintain high standards of data management, record-keeping, and patient confidentiality in line with national regulations.
- Participate in consultant appraisals, peer reviews, and revalidation requirements.
Professional Development and Education
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) through the Royal College of Pathologists and internal programmes.
- Contribute to audit, research, and clinical governance initiatives.
- Support training of junior doctors, scientific staff, and medical students, including involvement with teaching programmes linked to Leicester Medical School.
- Participate in clinical strategy and policy planning, including development of new methods, equipment planning, and service-level agreements.
Essential Requirements
- Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Recognised medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent).
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Histopathology or Cellular Pathology, or within six months of award.
- Demonstrable experience in diagnostic histopathology, morbid anatomy, and cytopathology.
- Proven ability to lead and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Active participation in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Commitment to teaching, mentorship, and ongoing professional development.
Desirable Attributes
- Higher academic degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
- Prior experience in the UK NHS Cellular Pathology.
- Evidence of research publications in recognised medical or scientific journals.
- Experience with digital pathology, service transformation, or innovation projects.
- A defined subspecialist interest that complements the department’s current expertise.
