We are inviting applications for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic, expanding, and forward-thinking team of acute physicians within the Yorkshire and Humber region. This is an exciting opportunity for motivated consultants who are passionate about acute care and eager to contribute to the continued development of a modern, patient-focused Acute Medicine service.
Applicants with a strong interest in leadership and service transformation are particularly encouraged to apply, as the department is entering an exciting phase of growth supported by senior management. Both permanent and fixed-term (24-month) positions are available.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led care to acutely unwell medical and elderly patients, ensuring safe and effective clinical management.
- Deliver daily ward rounds on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) areas, providing senior decision-making and clinical leadership.
- Participate in the General Medical on-call rota, contributing to high-quality emergency care across the site.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in Emergency Medicine, General Practice, and other specialities to enhance patient flow and streamline admissions through the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU).
- Support multidisciplinary teamwork and contribute to the continuous development of the acute service model.
- Supervise, teach, and mentor junior doctors, speciality trainees, and medical students from Hull York Medical School (HYMS).
- Engage in clinical governance, audit, research, and service improvement projects to drive excellence in patient care.
- Participate in annual consultant appraisal, peer support, and the Consultant Development Programme.
Essential Requirements
- Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine or Emergency Medicine (or within six months of expected CCT/CESR completion).
- Recognised higher qualification – MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Valid ALS certificate (or equivalent).
- Demonstrated competence and independent clinical experience in managing acutely unwell medical patients.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, audit, and evidence-based practice.
- Experience in teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Proven ability to lead, inspire, and contribute to service development initiatives.
Desirable Attributes
- Substantive NHS experience at consultant or senior level.
- MD or equivalent higher degree, or evidence of clinical research involvement.
- Experience supervising postgraduate research or quality improvement projects.
- Familiarity with service organisation, change management, and leadership within a healthcare setting.
Additional Information
- Contract type: Permanent or fixed-term (24 months).
- Programmed Activities (PAs): 10 PAs (with the potential to increase to 12, subject to agreement).
