An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Locum Consultant in Dermatology to join a well-established and forward-thinking dermatology department within the Yorkshire and Humber region. This 12-month locum post offers the chance to work within a highly regarded team providing comprehensive dermatology services to a diverse patient population.

The department comprises 12 Consultants and 1 Associate Specialist, supported by speciality registrars, GPVTS trainees, a Physician Associate, and specialist nurses in dermatological surgery, skin cancer management, and chronic inflammatory disease. The team works collaboratively to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centred care across multiple sites in the region.

About the Department

The dermatology service provides a full range of general and specialist dermatology care, supported by excellent facilities, including:

  • Three dedicated dermatology theatres
  • Phototherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) suites
  • Patch testing facilities
  • Access to day case theatres for complex surgical procedures

The department maintains close working relationships with allied specialities such as Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, and Rheumatology, ensuring integrated and holistic care for patients.

In addition, the dermatology team is actively engaged in research, with multiple industry-sponsored and in-house projects supported by dedicated research nurses.

About the Role

This is a general dermatology post, and successful applicants will be encouraged to develop a special interest that complements the department’s existing expertise. The role includes participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as involvement in the daytime on-call rota, which speciality trainees support.

The post will be based primarily at one of the main hospital sites, with some cross-site working to support services across the region. Flexible job planning can be discussed to accommodate applicants’ preferences and special interests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality dermatological care for both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Contribute to dermatological surgery, skin cancer management, and chronic disease clinics.
  • Participate in the dermatology on-call rota during daytime hours.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contributing to training programmes linked with Hull York Medical School (HYMS).
  • Supervise, mentor, and appraise junior medical staff and trainees.
  • Contribute to departmental research, clinical audits, and service improvement initiatives.
  • Uphold GMC standards of practice and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Participate in consultant appraisal, peer support, and the Consultant Development Programme during the first year in post.
  • Collaborate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and policy development across the dermatology service.

Essential Requirements

  • Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Recognised medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Higher medical qualification, such as MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience and clinical skill in all aspects of Dermatology.
  • Experience in teaching and training medical students and junior doctors.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of participation in audit, clinical governance, and service improvement.
  • Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable Attributes

  • Previous NHS experience in Dermatology.
  • Evidence of research involvement or publications in relevant fields.
  • Experience supervising speciality trainees or SpRs.
  • Interest or experience in developing new dermatology services, such as clinical decision units or specialist clinics.
