An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join a growing and collaborative team in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team of Intensivists, contributing to daytime and on-call ICU duties.
A brand-new, purpose-built state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, opening in May 2025, features ten individual patient rooms, a rooftop terrace, and modern staff facilities designed to promote excellence in both patient care and clinician wellbeing.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality care for critically ill patients through dedicated ICU sessions and on-call duties.
- Participate in a 1:8 on-call rota, covering 26 weeknights and 20 weekend days annually.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team that includes experienced nursing, SAS, and trainee doctors.
- Contribute to the clinical governance agenda, including morbidity and mortality reviews, service development, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support the training and supervision of junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in the design and review of job plans, ensuring alignment with departmental and organisational goals.
- Maintain professional development, appraisal, and revalidation in line with GMC and NHS requirements.
About the Service
- The ICU operates with FICM-accredited Consultant cover 8 am–6 pm daily, supported overnight by Intensivists or Anaesthetists with ICM experience.
- The unit uses the Metavision Clinical Information System, allowing remote access to patient records and optimising workflow efficiency.
- A strong senior leadership group supports the nursing team and maintains excellent staffing levels.
- Consultants have the flexibility to shape their work pattern, including the option for dual speciality sessions in Anaesthesia or other compatible disciplines (up to 2.5 PAs per week).
Job Plan
- Total Programmed Activities (PAs): 10
- On-call Commitment: 2.8 PAs per week (Category A, 1:8 rota)
- Core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.25 PAs per week (includes CPD, appraisal, teaching, governance, and administration)
- Residency Requirement: Within 30 minutes (or 10 miles) of the base hospital for on-call duties.
- Job plans will be discussed and agreed upon with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director and reviewed annually.
Candidate Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Primary Medical Degree.
- Complete GMC registration and licence to practise.
- FRCA or equivalent qualification.
- FFICM accreditation and entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine, or within six months of CCT/CESR approval at the time of interview.
- Proven independent clinical experience and expertise in Intensive Care Medicine at Consultant level.
- Evidence of competence in advanced resuscitation and the management of critically unwell adults and children.
- Strong leadership and teamwork skills within a multidisciplinary setting.
- Experience in quality improvement, service development, and clinical governance.
- Proven teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supported by positive feedback.
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated compassion and emotional intelligence.
- Willingness to reside within 30 minutes (or 10 miles) of the hospital for on-call responsibilities.
Desirable Criteria:
- Post-CCT Fellowship.
- FICE/FUSIC accreditation.
- Instructor status in life support courses (ALS/ATLS/CCrISP).
- Substantive NHS experience.
