An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Locum Consultant in Medical Oncology to join a dedicated cancer services team in the Yorkshire and Humber region. This role focuses on the management and treatment of lung cancer and upper gastrointestinal malignancies, with a particular emphasis on pancreaticobiliary and neuroendocrine tumours.

The successful applicant will join a highly collaborative oncology department that promotes professional growth, teaching, and research participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert clinical management for patients with lung and upper GI cancers, including systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) prescribing.
  • Lead and participate in weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to ensure coordinated, evidence-based care.
  • Undertake on-call duties and provide acute oncology support for inpatients and new referrals on a rotational basis.
  • Engage in teaching and supervision of speciality trainees, junior doctors, and medical students as part of departmental education programs.
  • Participate in clinical research and contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives within the oncology service.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and peer review, maintaining high standards of professional practice and continuous improvement.

Teaching and Training

As part of the honorary lecturer appointment, the successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching for medical students through the Hull York Medical School (HYMS).
  • Provide postgraduate education and mentorship to oncology trainees.
  • Participate in the development of educational programs and assessment activities.

Professional Duties and Governance

  • Maintain compliance with GMC standards and professional responsibilities as outlined in “Good Medical Practice.”
  • Participate in annual appraisal and job planning to support ongoing professional development.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, and service evaluation to ensure high-quality, safe, and effective care.
  • Support research and innovation, including participation in clinical trials and academic activities.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital management and colleagues to enhance oncology services across the region.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential):

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Oncology via CCT (or within 6 months of completion) or CESR route
  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC
  • Full license to practise with the General Medical Council

Qualifications (Desirable):

  • Postgraduate degree (MD or PhD)
  • Substantive NHS experience

Experience (Essential):

  • Demonstrable clinical expertise in Medical Oncology
  • Experience in the management of lung and upper GI malignancies
  • Proven ability to teach and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate trainees

Experience (Desirable):

  • Previous experience in a substantive NHS consultant role
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research or service improvement
