An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Histopathology to join an established and dynamic pathology service in the South East region.
We are seeking a consultant with a specialist interest in pulmonary pathology, along with one or more additional subspecialties such as gynaecological, GI/HPB, breast, or skin pathology. The post is available on a permanent basis or as a fixed-term contract (6–12 months).
The role offers involvement in a wide range of diagnostic and academic activities, including histology and cytology reporting, MDT participation, postgraduate training, and potential engagement with research and molecular pathology.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Reporting of histology and cytology specimens
- Macroscopic specimen dissection (including scientist-supervised dissection)
- Multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs)
- Frozen section cover and rapid on-site cytology assessment
- Contribution to subspecialty services, including pulmonary pathology and at least one other area
Teaching & Training
- Supervise and train postgraduate doctors and speciality trainees within the deanery
- Contribute to dedicated teaching sessions and undergraduate teaching in collaboration with regional universities
- Support the development of biomedical scientists in specialist reporting and dissection
Research & Innovation
- Engage with audit, CPD, and quality improvement initiatives
- Opportunity to contribute to molecular pathology and digital pathology projects
- Participate in ongoing academic collaborations and service development
Service Development & Administration
- Take part in departmental rota and cover arrangements for colleagues
- Support clinical governance, appraisal, and peer review processes
- Contribute to the continuing advancement of digital pathology and AI integration within the service
Person Specification
Essential
- MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- FRCPath (or equivalent)
- Broad knowledge and experience across histopathology
- Proven ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Strong organisational, communication, and leadership skills
- Commitment to CPD, audit, and clinical governance
- Evidence of involvement in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
Desirable
- Subspecialty expertise in pulmonary pathology
- Experience with molecular pathology networks
- Experience in research and publications
- Within 6 months of CCT (for UK trainees)
