Adult Eating Disorders - Locum Consultant

We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to lead and deliver high-quality care across both outpatient and inpatient Adult Eating Disorder (ED) services. This is a newly configured post, offering an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role in shaping service development in line with the Scottish Government’s review and new guidance for Eating Disorder services.
The successful candidate will work within a well-established multidisciplinary team (MDT), providing psychiatric leadership, direct clinical care, and supporting ongoing service innovation. The role spans outpatient clinics and a regional specialist inpatient facility, with opportunities for research, teaching, and service development.
Key Responsibilities
Outpatient Service (5 PAs)
- Provide psychiatric leadership and clinical input for adults with eating disorders.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments, reviews, and urgent interventions.
- Work collaboratively with the MDT, including psychology, nursing, dietetics, and systemic therapists.
- Liaise with primary care, CAMHS, and transition services to ensure continuity of care.
Inpatient Service (5 PAs)
- Deliver Consultant-level care to inpatients and day-patients.
- Participate in therapeutic activities, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary reviews.
- Share Mental Health Act (MHA) and Responsible Medical Officer (RMO) duties with colleagues.
- Contribute to service development, governance, and quality assurance activities.
Additional Duties
- Liaise with gastroenterology teams and other specialities for patients requiring medical stabilisation.
- Support training and supervision of junior doctors, MDT staff, and medical students.
- Contribute to research, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in CPD and teaching activities, including postgraduate and GP education.
- Participate in management, governance, and service planning meetings.
Service Overview
- Outpatient Service: Regional specialist team delivering assessment, treatment, and training for eating disorders.
- Inpatient Service: A 10-bed unit with additional day-patient capacity, providing care for patients across the North of Scotland.
- Strong integration with regional partners, community-based services, and gastroenterology teams.
- Opportunities for hybrid working, including remote consultations where appropriate.
Eligibility Criteria
Essential
- MBChB (or equivalent medical degree).
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- CCT / CESR(CP) in General Adult Psychiatry, OR within 6 months of completion.
- Alternatively, CCT / CESR(CP) in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or Psychotherapy with relevant ED experience.
- Extensive experience in eating disorders, including adult and adolescent populations.
- Multidisciplinary teamwork experience, with proven teaching and supervision skills.
- Awareness of the Scottish Government’s new Eating Disorders specification.
Desirable
- AMP approval under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 (or willingness to obtain).
- Familiarity with psychotherapeutic modalities such as CBT, FBT, systemic, IPT, MBT, or psychodynamic approaches.
- Experience in service development, research, and academic teaching.
- Eligibility for honorary university lecturer status.
