Stroke- Consultant
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a dynamic, forward-thinking stroke service in the North West region. This is a full-time post with flexible conditions, including participation in weekend working.
The service delivers comprehensive acute stroke care, rehabilitation, rapid-access TIA assessment, ambulatory stroke services, and participates in the regional tele-stroke thrombolysis rota. The successful candidate will join a collaborative consultant team and rotate across different aspects of stroke care, ensuring a varied and rewarding job plan.
Primary Duties of the Job
The post holder will provide high-quality stroke care as part of a consultant rota covering:
- Acute Stroke Care – Daily consultant-led ward rounds for acute stroke patients, with all new admissions reviewed within 14 hours, in line with SSNAP requirements.
- Stroke Rehabilitation – Twice-weekly ward rounds, outpatient stroke clinics, and MDT participation, supported by junior doctors.
- TIA Service – Daily TIA clinics, supported by Carotid Doppler Ultrasound services, ensuring referrals are seen within 24 hours in line with NICE guidance.
- Ambulatory Stroke Service – Management of minor stroke, stroke mimics, inpatient referrals, and stroke outliers.
- Regional Tele-Stroke Thrombolysis – Participation in out-of-hours tele-stroke rota to support Lancashire and South Cumbria.
The rotation pattern is currently 2-week blocks across acute, rehabilitation, TIA, and ambulatory care, but may evolve to meet service needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- Provide consultant-led care for acute and rehabilitation stroke inpatients.
- Undertake rapid-access TIA clinics and ambulatory stroke clinics.
- Support inpatient referral management and outlier reviews.
- Deliver timely thrombolysis via the regional tele-stroke rota.
- Maintain high standards of clinical practice and contribute to stroke service improvement.
Education and Training
- Actively participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Provide supervision and teaching for junior doctors, speciality trainees, and allied health professionals.
- Contribute to faculty development and training initiatives, supported by excellent regional medical education facilities, simulation suites, and library resources.
Audit, Research, and Governance
- Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation, and regional/national audit programmes.
- Maintain CPD in line with Royal College of Physicians guidance.
- Engage in clinical governance, service improvement, and evidence-based practice.
- Support opportunities for stroke-related research and quality improvement projects.
Management and Leadership
- Contribute to the organisation and development of stroke services within the region.
- Work collaboratively across primary, secondary, and tertiary care services.
- Support the implementation of service innovations, ensuring compliance with clinical standards and guidelines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
Desirable
- Postgraduate degree (MD, PhD, MSc).
Experience and Clinical Skills
Essential
- Clinical expertise in stroke medicine, including thrombolysis and rehabilitation.
- Ability to manage a full range of acute medical emergencies.
- Independent responsibility for patient care with sound clinical judgement.
- Competency in Intermediate Life Support.
Desirable
- Advanced Life Support.
- Evidence of service development and innovation.
Teaching and Training
Essential
- Experience in teaching junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals.
