Consultant Histopathologist

We are seeking applications from experienced and motivated Consultant Histopathologists to join a collaborative and forward-thinking pathology service in Greater London.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a cohesive team that delivers high-quality histopathology services across a wide range of subspecialties. The post holder will contribute to diagnostic histopathology, multidisciplinary team meetings, and service development, while being supported to pursue subspecialist expertise and professional development.
The department is actively engaged in the implementation of digital pathology and offers flexibility in working arrangements, including opportunities for remote reporting and home-based activity.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive diagnostic histopathology service, including microscopic examination of tissue specimens and reporting.
- Offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of histological and cytological specimens.
- Develop subspecialist expertise in two or more areas of histopathology, contributing to team-based specialist reporting.
- Attend and actively contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including providing specialist input to clinical colleagues.
- Undertake urgent reporting and cover for colleagues as required during periods of absence.
- Ensure compliance with GMC standards and maintain high levels of patient confidentiality and safety.
Teaching and Training
- Participate in the supervision and teaching of medical students, junior doctors, specialty trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education (CME/CPD) activities within the department and region.
- Support the recruitment, appointment, and supervision of junior medical staff.
Research and Development
- Participate in regular clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in research and contribute to publications where appropriate.
- Apply research outcomes to clinical practice to enhance service quality.
Management and Governance
- Share responsibility with consultant colleagues for the efficient delivery and development of pathology services.
- Undertake management and administrative duties related to patient care, departmental organisation, and clinical governance.
- Contribute to service planning and the effective use of departmental resources.
- Actively participate in annual appraisal, job planning reviews, and peer review processes.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- FRCPath (or equivalent qualification).
- Full registration and licence to practise with the GMC.
- Primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview).
Desirable:
- Higher degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
- Postgraduate thesis.
Clinical Experience
Essential:
- Demonstrable high level of clinical competence and experience in cellular pathology.
- Evidence of continuous career progression in histopathology consistent with personal circumstances.
- Experience working as a Consultant Histopathologist in the UK.
Desirable:
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Participation in regular clinical audit.
- Experience of autopsy practice.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential:
- Ability to report across a broad range of histopathology and cytology specimens.
- Capacity to present findings and provide clear, expert clinical advice to colleagues.
- Ability to develop subspecialist expertise.
- Understanding of efficient resource management and service delivery.
- Commitment to CPD and participation in external quality assurance (EQA) schemes.
Desirable:
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research projects.
- Familiarity with service development and digital pathology.
