Psychiatrist (Psychosis Pathway) Camden - Consultant

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Intensive Psychosis Pathway in Greater London. The post has become available as the current post-holder has taken on a Clinical Director position within the division.

The Consultant will work within a well-established multidisciplinary team that includes statutory and voluntary sector professionals, providing holistic, community-based mental health care to patients across the South and Central Primary Care Networks.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level input and clinical leadership to maintain the highest clinical standards within the locality team.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients under the team’s care within the psychosis pathway.
  • Undertake medication reviews, Dialog+ care planning, risk assessments, safety planning, and management plans as required.
  • Support GPs and practice staff within the aligned PCNs by offering case discussions, joint consultations, and tailored training.
  • Ensure effective communication with GPs, primary care teams, patients, and carers.
  • Carry out Mental Health Act assessments and domiciliary assessments when required.
  • Play a key role in strengthening primary-secondary care integration and building effective partnerships with voluntary sector providers.
  • Provide clinical input into multidisciplinary case conferences for complex patients.
  • Actively engage with service user participation initiatives to ensure the patient voice is embedded in service development.
  • Participate in governance, audits, and quality improvement projects within the locality team.
  • Contribute to service performance, pathway development, and clinical priorities, ensuring high standards of patient care.
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and multi-professional staff, supporting their training and development.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide consultant leadership and clinical oversight to the psychosis pathway.
  • Attend handover meetings and allocate work appropriately within the team.
  • Assess and manage patients referred to the pathway, including urgent and complex cases.
  • Provide cross-cover with consultant colleagues during periods of annual leave.
  • Support junior medical staff through supervision, teaching, and mentorship.
  • Work collaboratively with inpatient, community recovery, crisis, and social care teams to ensure seamless care transitions.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive clinical records.
  • Participate in service audit, governance, and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide input into service strategy and policy development.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications / Registration

Essential

  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice.
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in psychiatry, or within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
  • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility).
  • Registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing.
  • Trained and approved as a clinical supervisor for doctors in training.

Desirable

  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry.
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry or related fields.
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor or Consultant Mentor.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Sound understanding of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice.
  • Broad clinical knowledge across the full range of mental disorders.
  • Experience in assessing and managing complex cases involving severe mental illness and high-risk histories.
  • Proficiency in a wide range of evidence-based treatments, including pharmacotherapy.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding practices.
  • Experience in workplace-based assessments of doctors in training.
  • Experience in organising and chairing meetings.
  • Understanding of clinical governance structures.
  • Willingness to participate in research and service evaluation.

Desirable

  • Previous Consultant or senior-level experience in community or inpatient psychiatry.
  • Experience in policy development, service redesign, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Track record in teaching and supervision of medical and multi-professional staff.
  • Experience in research and audit leadership.
