We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Consultant in Anaesthetics & Intensive Care Medicine to join our dynamic clinical team. The successful candidate will provide expert anaesthetic care across a range of surgical specialities and play a key role in the delivery of critical care services. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of anaesthetic and intensive care services within a forward-thinking and patient-focused healthcare environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide consultant-level anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgical procedures.
  • Deliver high-quality care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota for Anaesthetics and/or Intensive Care.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Provide expert advice and support to junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Teaching & Training

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to trainees in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.
  • Support ongoing professional development within the department.

Leadership & Management

  • Participate in departmental governance, audit, and service improvement activities.
  • Contribute to rota planning and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Support strategic planning for anaesthetic and critical care services.

Research & Innovation

  • Engage in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives where appropriate.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and continuous service development.

Person Specific.

Essential Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics and/or Intensive Care Medicine, or within 6 months of attaining this at the time of interview.
  • Intermediate (Step 1) training in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent.
  • Affiliate fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine or eligibility via the assessment route.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
  • Broad anaesthetic experience to UK CCT level.
  • Basic management training.
  • Proven commitment to teaching and training.

Desirable Criteria

  • UK NHS Experience
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent experience).
  • Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM) or equivalent higher qualification.
  • Demonstrable academic achievements or distinctions.
  • Additional ICU experience (UK or overseas) and/or advanced ICM training.
  • Certificate in formal management training.
  • Completion of formal teaching qualifications or relevant instructor courses (e.g. ATLS).
