An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join a well-supported and forward-thinking service in the Greater London region. This role offers the chance to play a key part in enhancing and developing elderly care within a busy, collaborative environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care for elderly patients, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, and Care of the Elderly to ensure consistent, optimal patient management.
  • Participate in a 1-in-3 on-call rota for elderly medicine, with additional duties in General Internal Medicine where applicable.
  • Contribute to service development, including the redesign of care pathways to meet the needs of the population served.
  • Lead and supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members, ensuring holistic and patient-centred care.
  • Undertake administrative duties such as timely triage of referrals, completion of discharge summaries, and adherence to local and national care standards.

Person Specification

Qualifications – Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of achieving CCT in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent.

Experience – Essential

  • NHS Experience
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of general medical and elderly care problems.
  • Experience in supervising junior doctors and teaching clinical skills.
  • Proven ability to run efficient acute services and manage multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in audit and quality improvement.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate thesis (PhD or MD).
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • IT skills and computer literacy.
