A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Anaesthetist with a special interest in Chronic Pain to join a well-established Anaesthesia, Pain, and Critical Care service in Greater London. The successful candidate will provide peri-operative anaesthetic care and contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality pain management services within a supportive and collaborative environment.
This position offers a stimulating balance of theatre work, pain medicine, teaching, and service development. Candidates wishing to work less than full time are encouraged to apply, and flexible job planning can be considered.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide comprehensive peri-operative care for patients during Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions, typically 08:00–18:00.
- Participate in a 1:15 on-call rota with prospective cover. On-call responsibilities include supporting junior doctors with general and obstetric emergencies, as well as paediatric resuscitation, if required.
- Provide consultant-level support to a two-tier on-call system that includes specialist-grade anaesthetists covering labour ward, paediatrics, fascia iliaca blocks, and emergency theatre overnight (22:00–08:00).
- Ensure presence on-site when emergency theatre activity is high, to allow registrar availability for paediatric resuscitations.
- Participate in anaesthesia for a broad range of surgical specialities including general surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, ophthalmology, cardiology, radiology, and endoscopy.
- Contribute to the chronic pain service, including outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary pain management strategies.
- Participate in acute pain management, supported by a team of specialist nurses.
Non-Clinical Duties
- Participate in weekly CPD meetings and bi-monthly clinical governance and audit sessions.
- Engage in quality improvement and contribute to departmental clinical governance activities.
- Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Royal College and GMC guidelines.
- Actively participate in departmental teaching programmes, including training junior anaesthetists, medical students, and allied health professionals.
- Fulfil the role of clinical and/or educational supervisor, with relevant accreditation.
- Contribute to departmental leadership through participation in Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs); some SPA responsibilities may be delivered remotely, subject to policy.
- Engage in the local appraisal and revalidation process, with full support from the medical education team.
Additional Information
- Consultant office space with hot desking facilities and shared secretarial support is available.
- Dedicated admin and clinical nurse support is provided for the chronic pain service.
- Emergency cover duties will remain within the limits of the European Working Time Directive.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthesia or equivalent.
- FFPMRCA or equivalent accreditation in Pain Medicine.
- Eligibility for full GMC registration and inclusion (or eligibility for inclusion within 6 months) on the Specialist Register.
Desirable:
- MSc in Pain Management.
Eligibility and Experience
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current license to practise at the time of appointment
- Relevant and demonstrable clinical experience in the speciality
