An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Medical Oncology to join a rapidly growing cancer centre in the East Midlands region. This role supports the continued development of a dynamic and patient-focused oncology service. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality cancer care and working collaboratively across clinical, managerial, and academic domains.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Daily medical assessment of patients undergoing chemotherapy (pre- and post-treatment).
- Prescribing chemotherapy and supporting nurse-led chemotherapy services.
- Clinical support and review of inpatients managed under Acute Oncology.
- Medical cover for managing adverse reactions and identification of clinical risks within the chemotherapy unit.
- Assessment and management of walk-in oncology patients presenting with complications.
- Participation in oncology outpatient clinics across various cancer pathways.
- Review and interpretation of laboratory results; coordination with pharmacy staff.
- Support for multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions and integration across all cancer pathways.
- Educational support and knowledge sharing with junior medical staff and trainees.
- Collaboration with Clinical Oncology Consultants and the wider cancer services team.
Managerial and Service Development
- Contribute to reviewing and prioritising service development needs.
- Provide expert advice and outreach to primary care and community services.
- Support in delivering complex treatment regimens within the chemotherapy suite.
- Participate in the repatriation of treatment regimens as appropriate.
- Engage with regional cancer networks and represent the department in relevant site-specific and peer-review meetings.
- Active participation in MDTs and departmental governance activities.
- Support nursing, allied health professional (AHP), and pharmacy teams in the delivery of safe and effective oncology care.
- Manage complications related to vascular access devices (e.g., PICC, Hickman lines).
- Work closely with the Cancer Services team to align local service delivery with national cancer strategies and quality standards.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MB ChB or equivalent medical degree.
- MRCP or FRCR (Medical Oncology) or equivalent.
Desirable:
- Higher medical degree (e.g., MD, PhD).
Training & Registration
Essential:
- Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) in Medical Oncology OR
- Registration on the GMC Specialist Register for Medical Oncology OR
- Within six months of achieving CCT at the time of the interview.
Experience
Essential:
- Broad training in Medical Oncology to specialist level.
- Demonstrated experience in managing oncology patients undergoing systemic anti-cancer therapy.
- Familiarity with UK chemotherapy safety standards and clinical governance frameworks.
