We are seeking a dynamic and committed Consultant Vascular Interventional Radiologist to join a well-established and nationally recognised team in the East Midlands. This is a replacement post aimed at supporting the growing demand for interventional radiology and strengthening a robust 24/7 vascular IR on-call service.

The successful applicant will join a team of 7 other consultants (total 8 WTE), working within a collaborative, group job plan model. The service offers a wide range of vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures, alongside cross-sectional diagnostic imaging.

There is a strong emphasis on multi-site collaboration, professional development, and high-quality patient care.

Primary Duties of the Job

  • Deliver a comprehensive elective and emergency interventional radiology service across the region.
  • Participate in a 1:7 on-call rota covering vascular interventions including EVAR, emergency GI bleeding, trauma, renal access, TIPSS, and obstetric emergencies.
  • Provide diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, plain films), vetting, and reporting as part of weekly clinical sessions.
  • Participate in IR outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and clinical-radiological discussions.
  • Deliver reciprocal leave cover in collaboration with consultant colleagues under a group job plan.
  • Provide 1PA of clinical work remotely via a home reporting station and contribute to insourcing activity (remotely) where agreed.
  • Participate in quality improvement, audit, governance, and departmental meetings.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training, and supervision of radiology trainees on the East Midlands Deanery North Training Programme.
  • Maintain active involvement in research, with support available via the local research infrastructure and strong university links.

Governance, Teaching & Research

Governance & Audit

All consultants are expected to take an active role in clinical governance, including:

  • Clinical audit and incident review
  • Risk management and quality improvement
  • Participation in morbidity & mortality meetings
  • Maintenance of CPD and evidence-based practice

Teaching

  • Active contribution to formal and informal teaching of medical students, radiology trainees, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Involvement in national and local training schemes is encouraged and supported.

Research

  • Opportunities exist for collaboration with local universities and research bodies.
  • Applicants with a research background or interest in Interventional Radiology innovation will be supported.

Person Specification

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Completion of Interventional Radiology training
  • Competence in vascular and non-vascular IR procedures, including EVAR, TIPSS, and emergency interventions
  • Experience in advanced MRA techniques and vascular ultrasound
  • Strong communication skills with patients, families, and MDT members

Desirable:

  • Paediatric IR experience
  • Oncological embolisation exposure
  • Multi-centre or multi-operator working experience
  • Communication skills training and/or human factors training

Professional Qualifications

Essential:

  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview

Desirable:

  • MRCP, MRCS or other relevant higher qualifications

Leadership & Management

Essential:

  • Ability to lead, delegate, and contribute to service development
  • Experience in team-based working and clinical service delivery
  • Willingness to adopt flexible work practices to support the group rota

Desirable:

  • Management training or degree
  • Experience in change management or strategic leadership

Audit, Teaching & Research

Essential:

  • Demonstrated participation in clinical audit
  • Experience teaching junior staff or radiology trainees

Desirable:

  • Original peer-reviewed publications in IR
  • Evidence of research activity in Interventional Radiology

Practical Requirements

  • Ability to travel between sites within the region
  • Commitment to timely reporting to meet A&E and cancer targets
  • Level 3 safeguarding training (for relevant paediatric contributions)
