CMHT - Consultant

We are seeking a compassionate and forward-thinking Consultant Psychiatrist to join a well-established Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in the South West. This is a city-wide post supporting adults with severe and enduring mental illness, offering both assessment and therapeutic interventions. The service is multidisciplinary and recovery-focused, with a commitment to collaborative working with patients, families, and professionals across care settings.
The post also includes a key advisory role to GPs, primary care mental health teams, and other community services, focused on routine consultation and service integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level psychiatric care and leadership to the CMHT
- Conduct assessments, reviews, and interventions for adults with complex and enduring mental health needs
- Lead multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to risk and care planning
- Collaborate with GPs and primary care teams to support integrated patient care
- Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
- Offer supervision and support to junior medical staff and trainees
- Participate in the Consultant on-call rota (if applicable)
- Maintain high standards of documentation, safeguarding, and governance
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)
- Section 12 and Approved Clinician status
- Extensive experience in community/adult psychiatry
Desirable
- MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate psychiatric qualification
- Higher degree (e.g., MSc, PhD)
- Endorsement in Liaison Psychiatry or Older Adult Psychiatry
- Qualification in teaching or medical education
Professional Skills and Experience
Essential
- Broad knowledge of psychiatric conditions and treatments
- Experience in multidisciplinary working, including CPA
- Understanding of the Mental Health Act and related legislation
- Skilled in clinical leadership, communication, and collaborative care
- Commitment to recovery-based approaches and patient-centred care
- Strong organisational, time management, and IT skills
- Experience in audit and service evaluation
Desirable
- Experience in special interest areas such as Personality Disorders, Eating Disorders, or ASD
- Teaching experience (medical students, junior doctors, MDT)
- Involvement in research or publication
- Proven ability to drive service innovation or improvement in community settings
- Experience working across organisational boundaries
- Enthusiasm for developing academic and leadership roles
