Trauma - Consultant
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the South West for a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine to lead and develop a newly created Major Trauma Rehabilitation Service. This role is ideal for a dynamic and forward-thinking individual passionate about transforming care pathways for trauma patients.
You will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred rehabilitation services across both acute and community settings. This includes collaboration with the regional Major Trauma Centre and the wider rehabilitation network to support patients with complex trauma-related needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist rehabilitation input for patients recovering from major trauma
- Lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and contribute to ongoing service development
- Work closely with acute care teams, community services, and regional stakeholders
- Deliver personalised rehabilitation plans to ensure seamless continuity of care
- Cross-cover responsibilities with the amputee rehabilitation service
Working Environment
This role spans two primary services:
- Major Trauma Service (based in an acute hospital setting)
- Prosthetics Service (community-based)
A team of Rehabilitation Medicine Consultants across the South West will professionally support the post. You will join a collaborative and diverse group of physicians unified by a shared commitment to improving care for patients limited by trauma, neurological conditions, frailty, or severe illness.
There is an established network of support, including:
- Community physicians
- Psychiatry teams
- Community therapy and crisis response services
- Long-term condition nurses
All teams work on a shared electronic record system, ensuring integrated care across services.
Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential):
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- CCT/CESR in Rehabilitation Medicine (or within six months of achieving)
Desirable:
- Higher qualifications in rehabilitation
- Medical education qualifications
Experience (Essential):
- Extensive training and clinical expertise in rehabilitation medicine
- General medical competence to manage emergencies (if on-call)
- Clinical audit, teaching, and multidisciplinary teamwork experience
- High ethical standards and strong communication skills
Desirable:
- Experience managing limb spasticity (e.g., botulinum toxin)
- Special interest in prosthetics or major trauma
- Experience in service development, research, or published academic work
- Teaching experience at the undergraduate and multidisciplinary levels
