Glaucoma Ophthalmology - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Glaucoma Ophthalmology to join a highly regarded and well-resourced Ophthalmology Department in the East Midlands. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading, coordinating, and delivering care within the Glaucoma service, as well as contributing to the general Ophthalmology provision across the region.

This post is ideal for a dynamic and forward-thinking specialist who is passionate about service development, education, and high-quality patient care. A multi-disciplinary team will support the appointee and will have access to modern, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide comprehensive medical and surgical care for patients with Glaucoma.
  • Perform glaucoma laser procedures (including SLT and cyclodestructive techniques) and glaucoma surgeries such as trabeculectomy and tube implants.
  • Undertake Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) and standard cataract surgery to a high level of proficiency.
  • Run outpatient clinics, typically seeing a mixture of new and follow-up glaucoma patients per session.
  • Deliver sessions per week in a primary care/eye casualty setting.
  • Support and help manage a well-established consultant-led, technician-delivered virtual glaucoma clinic.
  • Deliver general ophthalmology care alongside subspecialty responsibilities.
  • Ensure continuity of care and assume ongoing responsibility for assigned patients.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • FRCOphth or equivalent qualification
  • GMC registration with specialist registration in Ophthalmology (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)

Desirable:

  • MD, PhD, or other higher degree

Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Extensive experience and training in Glaucoma, including surgical and laser procedures
  • Proficiency in adult cataract surgery
  • Ability to manage and develop subspecialty and general ophthalmology services
  • Commitment to teaching, clinical audit, and governance
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Valid driving licence and access to transport for multi-site working
