Respiratory - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a dynamic and expanding team in the South East. This full-time, substantive role offers the chance to work in a purpose-built, modern hospital serving a population of over 400,000.
You will join a team of seven Respiratory Consultants, delivering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. The post includes general respiratory responsibilities and the opportunity to develop or enhance subspecialty services, particularly in areas such as asthma, lung cancer, sleep and domiciliary ventilation, or advanced respiratory care in high-dependency units.
Main Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide inpatient respiratory care, including management within an expanded respiratory high-care unit.
- Conduct general and specialist outpatient clinics aligned with your interests and departmental priorities.
- Perform bronchoscopy and contribute to respiratory procedures and diagnostics.
- Participate in respiratory in-reach services, supporting acute medical teams.
- Deliver care as part of a multi-professional team, contributing to regular multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Undertake ward rounds, including emergency cover and on-call responsibilities in line with departmental rota.
- Provide continuing responsibility for patient care and related administrative tasks, supported by medical secretaries.
- Develop and lead subspecialty services in alignment with divisional strategy.
- Participate in and contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education.
- Ensure timely and effective handover during planned and unplanned leave periods.
- Support and conduct emergency clinical duties as required.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
- Support the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director in service planning and strategic development.
- Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives and service transformation projects.
- Participate in recruitment, workforce planning, and mentorship of junior staff.
- Collaborate with clinical and non-clinical colleagues across divisions to support integrated care delivery.
- Ensure cost-effective use of clinical and non-clinical resources in line with budgetary goals.
- Assist with investigations, incident reviews, and risk management activities.
- Uphold Trust values and NHS constitutional principles in clinical decision-making and leadership.
Clinical Governance and Audit
- Participate in the creation and delivery of the Division’s clinical governance plan and quality strategy.
- Implement evidence-based practices, including compliance with national and local clinical guidelines.
- Contribute to the divisional clinical audit programme and quality improvement projects.
- Assist in meeting clinical and educational targets set in collaboration with the education team.
- Promote patient safety and learning through effective complaint resolution and reflective practice.
- Encourage and participate in research and innovation relevant to respiratory medicine.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
Clinical Experience
Essential:
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards
- Broad experience in managing a full spectrum of respiratory conditions
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- Proven capability to manage independent patient care at the consultant level
Desirable:
- Subspecialty interests such as asthma, sleep medicine, domiciliary ventilation, or respiratory HDU
- Involvement in clinical audit, teaching, or research
