Stroke - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and dynamic Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine to join a well-established, supportive, and multidisciplinary stroke team in the South West. This permanent position offers the chance to play a vital role in delivering high-quality stroke care across the region.
You will be part of a committed team of Stroke Consultants working collaboratively to deliver efficient, evidence-based, and patient-centred care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Take clinical responsibility for assessing stroke referrals from ED and AMU.
- Lead the initial assessment, investigations, and early management of patients presenting with suspected stroke or TIA.
- Contribute to consultant-led care on a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU).
- Conduct daily ward rounds, review all new patients, and monitor those within their first hours of admission.
- Supported by a registrar-level doctor, junior doctors, and a skilled multidisciplinary team, including 7-day access to physiotherapy and OT assessments.
- Participate in twice-daily handovers — a board round at the beginning of the day and a dedicated handover to nurses and therapists after the round.
- Provide input on the Acute Stroke Unit (ASU), co-located with the HASU.
- Collaborate with a second stroke consultant to deliver daily ward rounds.
- Lead structured team handovers and ensure seamless communication with ward nursing staff.
Service Delivery and Clinical Leadership
- Provide high-quality stroke care in line with national guidelines and best practice standards.
- Take part in continuous service improvement and clinical governance initiatives.
- Participate in audit and stroke pathway reviews to maintain and enhance the standard of care.
- Engage in regional collaborations and support stroke rehabilitation services.
Education and Development
- Support and supervise junior medical staff, foundation doctors, and trainees.
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching in partnership with affiliated medical schools.
- Participate in stroke-related CPD, research, or service development projects.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Complete GMC Registration and licence to practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
Desirable:
- Higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD, PhD)
Experience
Essential:
- Extensive experience in Stroke Medicine
- Demonstrated ability to manage a full stroke medicine caseload independently
- Proven teaching experience with junior doctors and medical students
- Participation in clinical audit and service development
- Collaborative expertise in clinical or academic research
