An excellent opportunity has arisen for Consultant Microbiologists to join a collaborative, forward-thinking Microbiology team in the South West region. The department is seeking to expand and transform its microbiology services.
The successful applicants will work within a dynamic and supportive microbiology department, with flexibility over job plan arrangements to suit individual requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive infection service across the organisation, including direct clinical care, infection prevention and control (IPC), and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Lead on infection management strategy and policy within the Trust.
- Engage in timely clinical liaison with consultant colleagues, hospital staff, GPs, antibiotic pharmacists, IPC nurses, Genito-Urinary Medicine physicians, respiratory physicians, health protection consultants, and others involved in infection diagnosis, prevention, and management.
- Conduct regular ward visits and provide dedicated microbiology input to key units, including:
- Intensive Care
- Haematology/Oncology
- Medical/Surgical Admissions Units
- Participate in regular departmental and governance committees, including:
- Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) meetings
- Medicines Management Committee
- Antibiotic Working Group
- Sepsis Working Group
- Pathology Directorate Meetings
- Microbiology Management Committee
- Contribute to Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs), including:
- Orthopaedic MDT
- Diabetic/High-Risk Foot MDT
- Cardiology MDT
- Antibiotic pharmacy rounds
- Develop sub-speciality interests that align with service needs and strategic priorities.
- Participate in teaching and training activities, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education.
- Provide consultant cover during colleagues’ absences and participate in the out-of-hours consultant rota.
- Engage in clinical audit, service evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Undertake emergency duties and support unforeseen clinical demands as required.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise or eligibility for registration within six months of the interview.
- FRCPath (UK) by examination or equivalent qualification.
- Thorough and broad training in Medical Microbiology.
- Ability to deliver the service independently and to a high clinical standard.
- Expertise in infection prevention and control.
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based practice in Medical Microbiology.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and team-working skills.
- Commitment to the development of high-quality, patient-centred services.
Desirable Requirements
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
- Additional relevant higher qualifications.
- Formal IPC qualification.
- Evidence of a complementary specialist interest.
- Experience in antimicrobial stewardship and the rationalisation of prescribing practices.
- Experience or interest in Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT).
- Demonstrable experience leading service improvements or transformation initiatives.
