Neonatal Matron

An exciting opportunity for a qualified and ambitious neonatal nurse to join a dynamic, well-established multidisciplinary team as Neonatal Matron has arisen. This full-time position plays a key leadership role in shaping and developing services within a Level 2 Local Neonatal Unit (NNU), offering care across 20 cots, including intensive care, high dependency, and special care.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care. This evident operational leadership position requires clinical credibility, strategic vision, and a passion for driving continuous improvement in neonatal services.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership across the Neonatal inpatient and outpatient departments and Neonatal Outreach services.
  • Lead on quality, safety, and patient experience across the NNU.
  • Act as a role model and mentor to clinical staff, supporting their professional development and ensuring evidence-based care.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Nursing, General Manager, and Clinical Directors to align unit objectives with organisational goals.
  • Promote and implement quality improvement initiatives per national standards and trust policies.
  • Support incident management, clinical governance processes, and safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Ensure effective communication between frontline teams and executive leadership, contributing to a culture of openness and excellence.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC or HCPC)
  • Post-registration training in Neonatal care
  • Proven operational management experience within a hospital setting
  • Substantial clinical experience in a Neonatal Unit
  • Demonstrable leadership and mentoring skills
  • Experience in driving service improvement and handling competing priorities

Desirable

  • Degree in healthcare or management
  • Leadership or teaching qualification
  • Experience in budgetary control, clinical governance, and workforce planning

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective decision-making and organisational abilities
  • Proven ability to build rapport with staff at all levels and external partners
  • Passion for patient-centred care
