An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Locum Consultant in Medical Microbiology to join a dynamic and well-established microbiology and infectious diseases team in the North West. This is a 12-month fixed-term position with flexible working patterns considered.
You will join a multidisciplinary and forward-thinking service providing comprehensive clinical microbiology and infection services across acute, community, and mental health settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical microbiology advice to clinicians across acute and community hospitals, mental health trusts, and primary care
- Participate in ward rounds, infection MDTs, and clinical consultations
- Support infection prevention and control (IPC) initiatives and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes
- Contribute to equitable participation in the shared clinical rota, including out-of-hours cover
- Collaborate closely with the infectious diseases team, specialist microbiologists, and advanced practice staff
- Engage in lab-based microbiology responsibilities supported by a modern automated diagnostic service
- Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and teaching activities
Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
- MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCPath (UK) or equivalent
- Eligible for or within 6 months of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Microbiology (or Microbiology & Infectious Diseases)
- Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalence to UK CCT and the ability to submit CESR within 3 months of appointment
Desirable
- Complete and specialist GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP or relevant additional qualifications in microbiology/infection control
- Higher medical degree (PhD/MD)
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Broad and in-depth training in clinical microbiology and infection management
- Demonstrated experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of infections
- Familiarity with UK-based infection services and multidisciplinary models of care
Desirable
- Experience in infection control, clinical virology, or molecular diagnostic microbiology
- Previous work within a UK infection disease unit or with IPC/AMS initiatives
