Consultant in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to join a dynamic and supportive CAMHS Liaison team in the South East region. This is key in providing senior medical leadership within a well-established multidisciplinary setting that delivers high-quality mental health care to children and young people.

Role Overview:

The Consultant will work closely with a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, an Occupational Therapist, psychiatry trainees, and other healthcare professionals, contributing to the care of under-18 patients across inpatient services. The service operates Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, and also plays a key role in the management of eating disorders and other acute psychiatric needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and management plans for paediatric patients with a range of mental health conditions.
  • Lead the development of tailored care plans through a biopsychosocial approach.
  • Support the CAMHS Liaison team through consultation, supervision, and collaborative care planning.
  • Contribute to the training and development of junior medical staff and other professionals.
  • Participate in the ongoing development of service protocols, clinical pathways, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and staff development programmes.
  • Ensure care delivery aligns with current legislation, including the Mental Health and Children Act.

Candidate Profile:

Essential:

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Higher training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Experience with MDT and multi-agency working.
  • Strong risk assessment and psychopharmacology skills relevant to CAMHS.
  • Proven teaching experience and familiarity with the Mental Health Act.

Desirable:

  • Section 12(2) MHA approval.
  • Experience in CAMHS Liaison Psychiatry.
  • Psychological therapy skills.
  • Teaching qualifications.
