Geriatrics - Consultant
An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join a well-established team of six experienced Geriatricians. This appointment is part of a strategic expansion in response to the increasing number of frail elderly admissions in the region.
This role combines EAU-based (Emergency Assessment Unit) geriatric care with developing a robust front-end frailty service. The successful candidate will work closely with two specialist nurses and a Geriatric Fellow to design and implement patient-centred pathways that support early intervention for elderly patients at the beginning of their acute illness journey.
Key responsibilities:
- Take a lead role in developing front-end frailty pathways to support early identification and intervention for older adults.
- Collaborate with county-wide admission avoidance services (CECS) and integrated health and social care community teams.
- Participate in delivering high-quality teaching for medical students (particularly Leicester undergraduates), junior doctors, and nursing staff.
- Support departmental clinical governance, including audits, reviews, and shared learning from incidents or complaints.
- Contribute to service planning and strategic development through participation in Department of Medicine meetings and representation on the Directorate Management Board.
- Participate in the general medical on-call rota.
- Engage in regular job plan reviews and support continuous improvement of the service.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration with specialist registration in Geriatric Medicine (or within 6 months of obtaining it at the time of interview)
- Experience in teaching undergraduates and junior medical staff
- Experience of audit and quality improvement initiatives
- High-level communication, organisational and leadership skills
Desirable:
- Higher degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
- Education/Medical Education Qualification (preferably at Master’s level)
- Publications or presentations at the national level
- Involvement in curriculum development or structured education delivery
- Research in quality improvement or geriatrics
