Acute Medicine - Consultant

We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to join our growing team of Acute Medicine Consultants in the Southwest region. Our current team consists of 10 Consultants and 8 Specialty Doctors, with expertise across various specialties, including Respiratory, Diabetes, Renal, Gastroenterology, and Intensive Care.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of new models of care and services, supporting patients both in the hospital and within the local community. There are also opportunities for involvement in teaching as part of the University of Exeter Medical School.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality acute medical care, working closely with consultant colleagues to ensure the efficient running of the service.
  • See and manage patients in an Acute Medical Admissions Unit.
  • Contribute to outpatient services, supporting patients along their medical pathways.
  • Deliver minor procedures, diagnostics, and complex patient management.
  • Work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, supporting timely assessments and treatments.
  • Participate in teaching medical students, peers, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Engage in medical audit, clinical governance, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Support research initiatives where applicable.
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours responsibilities as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • GMC Registration with a License to Practice - (Essential)
  • GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) - (Desirable)

Experience

  • Experience working in an Acute Medical Admissions Unit
  • Experience in teaching and training medical students and healthcare professionals

Desirable:

  • Experience in supporting Emergency Departments
