Respiratory Medicine Consultant
Applications are invited for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a dynamic and rapidly evolving department in the South East region of the UK.
You will be part of a dedicated team of 6 Consultants, 1 Respiratory Nurse Consultant, 7 Nurse Specialists (covering sleep, lung cancer, and NIV), an in-patient Respiratory Practitioner team, and a fully equipped Respiratory Physiology department. The service is undergoing significant expansion to enhance sub-specialty work and provide a 7-day respiratory service across the region.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful applicant will have extensive experience in General Respiratory Medicine, with expertise in Pleural, ILD, Allergy, or Lung Cancer. Sub-specialty interests will be accommodated, including interests in Intensive Care, Infectious Diseases, or Acute Medicine.
Key responsibilities include:
- Weekly EBUS and Pleural lists, including IPC insertion.
- Covering the acute ward and supporting the in-reach respiratory service.
- Contributing to one of the largest sleep and domiciliary NIV services in the country, which has recently expanded to enhance service delivery.
- Collaborating with an increasing number of respiratory nurses to improve inpatient and outpatient services.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Full GMC Registration.
- CCST Specialist Registration in Respiratory Medicine (or eligibility within six months of interview).
- Broad clinical knowledge and expertise in Respiratory Medicine.
- Sound clinical judgment and risk management skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to travel between sites as required.
Desirable Criteria:
- Higher Degree (MD/PhD or equivalent).
- Interest in sub-specialties such as Pleural Services, Lung Cancer, ILD, Intensive Care, or Infectious Disease in Respiratory Medicine.
- Previous experience in clinical governance, leadership, or quality improvement initiatives.
Additional Information
- NHS experience as a Consultant is essential.
- Specialist registration with the GMC is preferred; however, extensive experience may be considered in place of specialist registration.
- There is potential for stepping up to a Lead role.
