Acute Medicine - Consultant

A University Teaching Hospital in North West England is seeking a highly motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join its expanding Acute Medicine Service. This role provides an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the development and delivery of acute medical care, ensuring high-quality, patient-centred services across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC), and the Emergency Department.

The successful candidate will join an established team of Acute Medicine Consultants, working alongside a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care pathways and further develop Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide senior clinical leadership and support across the 27-bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC), and Emergency Department.
  • Deliver high-quality acute medical care to patients requiring urgent assessment and treatment.
  • Participate in post-take ward rounds and patient reviews within the acute medical setting.
  • Work closely with colleagues across specialties to ensure efficient patient flow and optimal outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services.
  • Ensure patient safety and high standards of care in line with GMC’s ‘Good Medical Practice’ guidance.

Education, Research & Service Development:

  • Participate in the teaching, training, and supervision of medical students and postgraduate trainees.
  • Support the hospital’s research agenda, contributing to clinical trials, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in clinical governance, service innovation, and change management to enhance acute medical services.
  • Actively contribute to Trust-wide targets and national NHS priorities.

Management & Leadership:

  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and management to deliver a comprehensive and patient-centred acute medical service.
  • Ensure effective resource management and compliance with NHS clinical and operational guidelines.
  • Participate in service planning, development, and workforce management to enhance the efficiency of acute care pathways.
  • Support and promote user involvement, patient feedback, and continuous service improvement.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent higher medical qualification.
  • GMC Specialist Registration in Acute Medicine (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CESR at the time of interview).
  • High standard of clinical expertise in the management of acute medical conditions.
  • Ability to take full responsibility for acute medical patients and contribute to the on-call rota.
  • Experience in supervising and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and innovative service models.
  • Formal teaching qualifications or experience in training multidisciplinary teams.
  • Previous research involvement with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in clinical leadership, change management, and digital transformation in healthcare.
