Gastroenterology - Consultant

A University Teaching Hospital in the West Midlands is seeking a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our experienced team. The Gastroenterology Department serves the county of Shropshire and Mid Wales and comprises 8 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 1 Consultant Hepatologist across two hospital sites.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide high-quality care for patients with gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Independently manage a mix of emergency and elective gastroenterology cases.
  • Participate in the Gastroenterology on-call rota.
  • Contribute to audit, governance, and training for junior doctors and multi-disciplinary staff.
  • Attend and contribute to Upper GI / Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT meetings.

Professional Development & Teamwork:

  • Develop enhanced clinical skills in the management of acutely ill patients.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-professional team.
  • Help achieve clinical and quality targets agreed both locally and nationally.
  • Engage in research, education, and leadership within the department.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • MBBS, MB ChB, or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (within 6 months of interview).
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).

Desirable Criteria:

  • PhD, MD, or higher education qualification.
  • Experience in advanced endoscopic procedures or subspecialty interest in Gastroenterology.
