Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality care in:
- General Gastroenterology
- Hepatology
- Endoscopy services
- Run weekly gastroenterology outpatient clinics
- Perform and support:
- Elective endoscopy
- Emergency endoscopy procedures
- Participate in the consultant of the week model for:
- Referral vetting
- Clinical advice
- Inpatient support
Referrals are triaged electronically with targets including 2-week urgent cancer pathways and 12-week routine pathways.
Inpatient & Acute Care
- Contribute to the general medical unit and inpatient care
- Work alongside multidisciplinary teams across specialities
- Support ambulatory care services and acute admissions
The medical unit includes dedicated wards, assessment units, and access to high-dependency care facilities.
Teaching, Audit & Leadership
- Supervise and train:
- Junior doctors (FY, GPST, ST trainees)
- Participate in:
- Clinical audit
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Service development projects
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education
Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent qualification
- MRCP (or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- On (or within 6 months of entry to) the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Competence in:
- Gastroenterology
- Endoscopy
- General Internal Medicine
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD / PhD or equivalent)
- Teaching qualification
- Experience in:
- Research and publications
- Service development and leadership
- Additional accreditation in General Internal Medicine
