An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine to join a supportive and enthusiastic District General Hospital team in the North East of England.
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led anaesthetic care in both elective and emergency settings, alongside regular sessions in Intensive Care Medicine.

The post is particularly suited to a Consultant who is keen to combine Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, contribute to teaching and clinical governance, and develop specialist skills in line with departmental and service requirements.

 

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide consultant-led anaesthetic care for elective and emergency patients.
  • Undertake regular clinical sessions in Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Participate in the Intensive Care Medicine consultant rota.
  • Provide consultant-level care for critically ill patients.
  • Contribute to continuity of care within the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Participate in managing emergency cases.
  • Support paediatric stabilisation arrangements as part of the consultant team.
  • Work collaboratively with anaesthetic, intensive care, surgical, medical and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff and trainees.
  • Participate in teaching and clinical supervision.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, research and quality improvement.
  • Participate in clinical governance and multidisciplinary review meetings.
  • Support service development, innovation and the development of specialist skills.
  • Deputise for colleagues when required.
  • Undertake additional duties in emergency or unforeseen circumstances where necessary to maintain continuity of patient care.


Anaesthesia

The post provides exposure to a broad range of elective and emergency anaesthetic work.
The department supports surgical services including:
  • General Surgery
  • Major colorectal surgery
  • Breast surgery

  • Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery
  • ENT
  • Obstetric and Gynaecological Surgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Urology
  • Community Dental Services

The anaesthetic service has an established regional anaesthesia service supported by a regional fellow and acute pain team. Consultant-led pre-assessment clinics also include CPEX testing. 


Intensive Care Medicine

The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary Intensive Care Medicine service providing care for critically ill medical and surgical patients.
The Intensive Care Unit has 11 commissioned beds, providing flexible Level 2 and Level 3 care. Consultant sessions are structured around continuity of care, including fixed continuity weeks.
The service is supported by:
  • Consultant-led Rapid Access Critical Intervention (RaCI)
  • Nurse-led IV services
  • Acute Intervention Teams
  • Multidisciplinary specialist input
  • Renal and neurology support
  • Tertiary referral relationships
  • Trust-wide Critical Care collaboration
  • Regular Critical Care Delivery Group meetings
  • Monthly morbidity and mortality and governance reviews
  • On-site simulation facilities
The department also has an integrated electronic patient record system that supports clinical documentation, prescribing, and ordering.

Teaching & Training

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching and supervision.
Responsibilities include:
  • Teaching trainees at the bedside.
  • Classroom-based teaching.
  • Supervision of junior doctors and trainees.
  • Educational supervision.
  • Clinical supervision.
  • Participation in the weekly anaesthetic teaching programme.
  • Contribution to Intensive Care Medicine teaching.
  • Supporting simulation-based learning.
The department has an established teaching programme for trainees and pre-FRCA doctors, with access to dedicated Intensive Care Medicine teaching and simulation facilities.

Research, Audit & Innovation

Research and clinical audit are considered integral components of the role.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to:
  • Participate in clinical audit.

  • Contribute to research publications and presentations.
  • Develop services and educational courses.
  • Introduce appropriate innovation into clinical practice.

The post holder will participate fully in clinical governance arrangements, including:

The department holds regular M&M and governance reviews and has established multidisciplinary critical care governance arrangements.

Person Specification

Statutory Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC.
  • Licence to practise with the GMC.
  • Specialist Registration with the GMC in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Applicants must have attained CCT or be within 6 months of their CCT date at the time of interview.
  • Evidence of adherence to appraisal and GMC revalidation processes.
  • Applicants applying through CESR must provide appropriate documentary evidence confirming their application has been submitted and is under consideration by the GMC.
GMC Specialist Registration is essential for this position.


Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • FRCA.
  • FCICM or EDIC.

Desirable

  • ALS.
  • ATLS.
  • APLS/EPLS.
  • Other relevant complementary qualifications.


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in providing Intensive Care Medicine for the patient populations and specialities supported by the service.
  • Clinical skills appropriate for Consultant-level practice in Anaesthesia with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Experience of supervising trainees.
  • Experience of a significant quality improvement project.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of clinical governance principles.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Ability to delegate appropriately to trainees and non-consultant career-grade anaesthetists.
  • Understanding of the importance of research.

Desirable

  • Evidence of commitment to clinical audit with demonstrable outcomes benefiting patients.
  • Publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
