Consultant Geriatrician (Substantive)

We are seeking a Consultant Geriatrician to join an expanding Care of Older People service in the South West.The successful candidate will join a supportive multidisciplinary team of consultant geriatricians and associate specialists, with opportunities to develop specialist interests and contribute to the continued development of innovative models of frailty and older adult care.
The role offers a broad range of clinical opportunities across inpatient and outpatient geriatric medicine, including front-door frailty, orthogeriatrics, dementia and delirium, movement disorders, and liaison with surgical, oncology and cardiology services.
Flexible working and job-sharing arrangements can be considered.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will:
- Provide specialist geriatric medical care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Contribute to front-door frailty services, including Emergency Department and Acute Frailty Unit assessment.
- Contribute to orthogeriatrics and osteoporosis care.
- Participate in Parkinson's disease and movement disorder clinics.
- Provide surgical, oncogeriatric and cardiology liaison.
- Contribute to dementia and delirium services.
- Undertake outpatient subspecialty clinics.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development.
- Supervise and mentor doctors in training and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Provide clinical and educational supervision to doctors in training, including assessment and appraisal.
- Participate in job planning, appraisal and mandatory training.
- Contribute to the development of a seven-day frailty service.
- Develop a subspecialty interest aligned with departmental and service needs.
- Opportunity to participate in the General Internal Medicine on-call rota, depending on experience and interest.

About the Department
The geriatric medicine team comprises 17 consultants and associate specialists, alongside two community-based geriatricians. The service is supported by specialist registrars, a Chief Registrar, IMT trainees, CESR trainees, clinical teaching fellows, Physician Associates and specialist nurses.Specialist nursing expertise includes frailty, perioperative care, fracture liaison and movement disorders, alongside a dementia and delirium outreach team.
The department has established links with medical schools and provides teaching and supervision for doctors in training and medical students.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Supervise and support doctors in training.
- Contribute to teaching and professional development.

- Contribute to clinical audit and quality improvement.

- Develop educational, research or leadership interests where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine, or within six months of CCT at the time of interview.
- Broad experience in managing complex older patients across acute and community settings.
- Demonstrable commitment to multidisciplinary team working.
- Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills.
- Experience in teaching and clinical supervision.
Desirable
- Interest in bone health.
- Interest or experience in frailty, dementia, falls or community geriatrics.
- Experience managing frail older people presenting acutely to hospital.
- Evidence of service development, clinical leadership or quality improvement.
- Experience in clinical research or audit.
- Interest in medical education or simulation-based teaching.
