We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Inpatient Psychiatry to join a well-supported multidisciplinary team within a 15-bed adult inpatient mental health ward.
This is a substantive 10 PA post, with an optional additional 1.25 PA for on-call duties. The post holder will provide clinical leadership for the ward and will assess, formulate, and manage patients under their care.
The role offers opportunities to contribute to service development, clinical supervision, education, research, audit and wider leadership activities.

 

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will:

• Provide clinical leadership for the adult inpatient ward.
• Assess patients and formulate comprehensive care plans for the ward caseload.
• Lead the management of high-risk and complex cases, including medication reviews.
• Lead ward rounds and multidisciplinary care planning.
• Act as Approved Clinician for inpatients.
• Prepare and present reports for Mental Health Act Tribunals, or supervise trainees undertaking this work.
• Work closely with families, community teams, Home Treatment and specialist services.
• Support effective discharge planning and continuity of care.
• Provide reciprocal cross-cover for other inpatient wards and Home Treatment services.
• Provide clinical supervision and advice to core and senior trainees.
• Attend clinical and management meetings.
• Contribute to service development and represent the ward at internal and external meetings and committees.
• Participate in CPD, appraisal and medical staff development.

The post holder will work within a well-supported MDT including:

• Consultant and trainee medical staff
• Registered Mental Health Nurses
• Healthcare Assistants
• Occupational Therapy
• Clinical Psychology
• Ward and service management
• Administrative support
• Activity organisers and service assistants

The attached job pack describes Rowan Ward 2 as a 15-bed inpatient unit, supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team including four clinical leads, registered nurses, an occupational therapist, psychology provision and medical trainees.

 

Job Plan

The substantive post is 10 PAs, with an optional additional 1.25 PAs allocated for on-call duties.
The job plan includes:

Education, Training & Professional Development

The role includes opportunities to:

• Supervise and teach postgraduate doctors.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

• An appropriate medical degree.
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• NHS Experience Required
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within six months of obtaining CCT.
• Section 12 approval.
• At least four years of postgraduate experience across a range of mental health settings.
• Good theoretical psychiatric knowledge, including knowledge relevant to MRCPsych.
• Ability to provide high-quality clinical care with appropriate supervision.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work flexibly under competing demands.
• Ability to demonstrate clear, logical and analytical thinking.
• Understanding of clinical governance and the NHS modernisation agenda.
• Knowledge of research principles.
• A driving licence or ability to travel between sites.

Desirable

• Approved Clinician (AC) approval.
• MRCPsych passed.
• Clinical skills required to discharge the responsibilities of the post.
• Experience working in a rehabilitation setting.
• Interest or experience in research.
• Evidence of teaching medical students, doctors in training and members of the wider MDT.
