An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in Pacing and Devices to join an established and developing Cardiology service in the West Midlands.
The successful candidate will have specialist expertise in device implantation, including complex pacing and defibrillators, with experience in conduction system pacing. We also welcome applications from candidates with additional cardiology interests.
The successful candidate will join an established device service and play a key role in its continued expansion, including developing new technologies and services. The department is undergoing significant redevelopment, offering the successful candidate opportunities to contribute to the future development of the Cardiology service.
The role involves working across both hospital sites, providing general Cardiology and specialist pacing services, alongside participation in the Cardiology on-call rota.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

• Diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of cardiological conditions.
• Provide ongoing care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Support complex multidisciplinary teams, including the Device MDT.
• Implant pacemakers and other cardiac devices.
• Contribute to developing and expanding the device service.
• Support the introduction and adoption of new device technologies.
• Participate in a 1:7 Cardiology-only out-of-hours on-call rota.
• Provide specialist Cardiology input when requested by General Medicine colleagues.
• Supervise Higher Speciality Trainees, IMT trainees and Clinical Fellows working towards CESR.
• Contribute to clinical quality targets and service development.
• Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
• Work effectively within multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams.

Cardiology & Device Service

The Cardiology service provides general and specialist cardiac care across both sites.
The service currently performs more than 600 device implantations per year, including device replacements, new pacing procedures and complex implants such as cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) and conduction system pacing (CSP). The service plans to further expand, including developing local leadless pacing.
The cardiac catheter laboratory supports:

• Diagnostic coronary angiography
• Simple and complex device implantation
• Pericardiocentesis
• Right heart catheterisation

The service also has dedicated pacing physiologist support and established links with tertiary centres for specialist procedures including electrophysiology, coronary intervention, structural cardiac work and cardiac surgery.

Service Development

The successful candidate will have an important role in the continued development of the Cardiology and device services.
Plans include expanding the device service and developing additional cardiac facilities. As part of the wider hospital transformation programme, the inpatient cardiac service and catheter laboratory are planned to relocate to one hospital site in Spring 2028, while outpatient services and diagnostics will remain at the other site. There is also an ambition to develop a second catheter laboratory and expand local PCI and device services.

 

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP or equivalent qualification
• Full registration and licence to practise with the GMC
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
• • CCT, or within six months of obtaining CCT, or
  • CESR, with GMC evidence of acceptance required at application.

Desirable

• Device accreditation, such as HRS, BHRS or EHRA
• Higher research degree or Fellowship
• Fellowship in Cardiac Pacing and Devices.
