We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join an established and supportive respiratory team.
The successful candidate will integrate into the existing respiratory service while developing their own specialist interests. We are looking for a candidate with broad experience in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine, with opportunities to shape the job plan around the service's needs and the candidate's skills and interests.
The department is particularly interested in candidates with experience in lung cancer, tuberculosis or sleep medicine. Skills in endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), radial-probe EBUS, indwelling pleural catheters (IPC) and medical thoracoscopy would be especially desirable. Support may also be available to develop these skills where required.
The post involves cross-site working across both hospital sites, with an expectation of continued cross-site working as services develop. Participation in an out-of-hours General Internal Medicine on-call rota is a core part of the role.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

• Support the Respiratory Medicine service across outpatient clinics, inpatient wards and inpatient/outpatient procedures.
• Manage patients with a broad range of respiratory and general medical conditions.
• Assess and manage acutely unwell patients.
• Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
• Participate in multidisciplinary and interprofessional working.
• Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed with clinical teams and commissioners.
• Contribute to the General Internal Medicine out-of-hours on-call rota.
• Participate in developing specialist respiratory services.
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development.

Respiratory Service

The respiratory department has an established consultant workforce working across both sites, providing general and specialist respiratory services.
The service includes:

• Acute respiratory medicine
• General respiratory outpatient clinics
• Inpatient respiratory care
• Acute Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV)
• High-flow nasal oxygen/Airvo
• CPAP
• Pleural ultrasound
• Fibreoptic bronchoscopy
• Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
• Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) services
• Lung function testing
• Domiciliary sleep services
• Tuberculosis services
• Lung cancer services
• Cystic fibrosis
• Bronchiectasis
• COPD
• Pulmonary rehabilitation
• Chronic NIV development

There are also two pleural procedure lists per week, with further development planned, alongside new services including radial-probe EBUS and medical thoracoscopy.

General Internal Medicine

The role includes participation in the General Internal Medicine service and out-of-hours rota.
The current on-call commitment is 1 in 14, with prospective cover. The role includes weekday evening and weekend work, with a 1.5 PA Direct Clinical Care allocation for general medicine out-of-hours work.

Person Specification

Qualifications – Essential

• MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP accreditation or equivalent experience

Qualifications – Desirable

• Master's degree in a relevant area of Respiratory Medicine
• PhD or evidence of higher education qualification

Entry Criteria – Essential

• Full GMC registration and licence to practise
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
• • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), with the proposed CCT date within six months of interview, or
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
