The post focuses on providing comprehensive specialist dermatology outpatient and surgical services. The department provides skin cancer clinics and skin cancer surgery lists, alongside general dermatology services. Candidates interested in cutaneous surgery and skin cancer are particularly well suited to the proposed job plan. However, we also consider general dermatologists with an opportunity to develop complementary subspecialty expertise.
The department has established academic and research links and provides specialist services including:

Main Duties

The successful Consultant will:

• Provide specialist outpatient dermatology services.
• Undertake skin cancer clinics and appropriate surgical treatment.
• Provide general dermatology services.
• Participate in Dermatology Advice & Guidance.
• Contribute to the dermatology on-call service.
• Provide advice on dermatological problems affecting inpatients when required.
• Work collaboratively with dermatology consultants, nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Supervise junior medical staff and trainees.
• Contribute to continuing medical education.
• Participate in clinical audit, research and clinical governance.
• Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care and departmental activities.
• Contribute to service development and change management.

Department & Working Environment

The department is a busy outpatient dermatology service within a university teaching setting. The main outpatient department is a dedicated unit, supported by nursing staff, healthcare assistants, nurse surgeons and skin cancer nurse specialists.
The service also has dedicated dermatology inpatient beds shared with acute medicine, while the dermatology team provides advice to other medical and surgical teams, particularly regarding serious drug reactions.
The wider team includes dermatology consultants, associate specialists, resident doctors, trainees, research fellows and clinical fellows, alongside an established nursing and specialist support team.

Teaching & Research

There is a significant teaching component. The post holder will contribute to:

• Undergraduate medical education.
• Postgraduate training.
• Teaching and supervision of junior doctors.
• Continuing medical education.
• Training of other healthcare professionals.

The department has established academic links and research opportunities, including potential involvement in commercial and networked research studies.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants should have:

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• GMC registration with a licence to practise
• Appropriate higher medical qualification, such as MRCP/MRCS or equivalent
• Appropriate dermatology knowledge and clinical judgement
• Good all-round experience in General Dermatology
• Experience in skin cancer and cutaneous surgery
• Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
• Experience supervising junior doctors
• High standards of clinical skill and expertise in dermatology
• Ability to contribute to the full range of skills required for the dermatology on-call rota
• Evidence of effective multidisciplinary working
• Evidence of audit/research
• Clinical governance experience
• Ability to teach clinical skills
• Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists.

Desirable Experience

Desirable attributes include:

• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or being within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
• MD or equivalent higher degree, or relevant research
• Interest in skin cancer and dermatological surgery or another dermatology subspecialty
• Experience in service organisation and development
• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
• Peer-reviewed publications
• Experience teaching clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates
• Experience teaching lay groups and other staff groups.
• Ability to arrange travel between working sites.
