We are looking for a dynamic, motivated Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a friendly, enthusiastic Gastroenterology team in North East England.This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly motivated, forward-thinking service providing comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Clinical Nutrition services.
The department is particularly looking to expand its IBD and Liver Disease services, while also welcoming Consultants with specialist interests across other areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
The Role
The successful Consultant will contribute to a comprehensive Gastroenterology service covering inpatient and outpatient care, endoscopy, hepatology and clinical nutrition.Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing Consultant-led inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology care.
- Participating in the Gastroenterologist of the Week rota.
- Managing patients admitted to the Gastroenterology wards.
- Providing specialist Gastroenterology opinions to acute medical and other speciality wards.
- Undertaking emergency endoscopy where required.
- Providing outpatient Gastroenterology clinics.
- Undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
- Contributing to the acute GI Bleed service.
- Supporting the development of specialist services, particularly IBD and Liver Disease.
- Contributing to a 7-day Gastroenterology service.
- Providing clinical and educational supervision to junior doctors and trainees.
- Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Contributing to clinical audit, clinical governance and quality improvement.
- Supporting research and service development.

A Strong Multidisciplinary Team
The successful candidate will join an established team comprising 13 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 2 Consultant Endoscopists, supported by speciality trainees, resident doctors, specialist nurses, research nurses and clinical endoscopists.The wider specialist nursing team includes dedicated IBD, Upper GI Cancer, Hepatology and Alcohol specialist staff, providing strong multidisciplinary support.
Research & Academic Opportunities
The Gastroenterology service is research-active, with opportunities to become involved in clinical research, clinical trials and translational research.The department has participated in several NIHR clinical studies and actively supports new Consultants in developing their own research activity.
Candidates with academic interests in clinical and translational research, clinical trials, advanced endoscopy, education and training would be particularly suited to the role.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Specialist Registration with the GMC in Gastroenterology or be eligible for Specialist Registration.
- CCT in the relevant speciality, or be within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
- Appropriate specialist training in Gastroenterology and/or Internal Medicine.
- Experience in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and G(I)M.
- Proficiency in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy.
- Good clinical skills and the ability to provide expert clinical opinion.
- Experience of supervising, training and teaching trainees.
- Understanding and experience of clinical audit.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Desirable
- Experience of service development.
- Experience working closely with community services.
- Research experience and clinical effectiveness work.
- Additional subspecialty expertise complementary to the existing team.
- Research, Master's or teaching qualification.
- MD/PhD or equivalent higher academic qualification.
- Advanced endoscopy experience.
