We are currently seeking a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to join an Intensive Outreach Pathway within a supportive, multidisciplinary mental health service.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide senior psychiatric input within the Intensive Outreach Pathway, supporting the assessment and management of adults with complex mental health presentations.
Key responsibilities will include:

• Providing expert assessment, diagnosis and formulation using a biopsychosocial approach.
• Developing and reviewing evidence-based treatment and management plans.
• Managing clinical complexity and uncertainty.
• Providing clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team.
• Supporting risk assessment, crisis planning and ongoing patient care.
• Undertaking Mental Health Act assessments and related responsibilities.
• Acting as a Responsible Clinician where required.
• Working collaboratively with patients, carers, GPs and wider community services.
• Supporting clinical supervision and development of junior medical staff.
• Contributing to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
• Participating in service development and improvement initiatives.
• Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

The Team

The service operates within a multidisciplinary environment, bringing together professionals from psychiatry, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, social work and other mental health disciplines. The approach is recovery-focused, supporting individuals to work towards their personal goals and greater independence.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

• MBBS or equivalent qualification
• Full GMC Registration with a current licence to practise.
• Included on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of obtaining specialist registration.
• Approved Clinician (AC) status or ability to achieve this within three months.
• Section 12 approval, or ability to obtain this within three months.
• Valid UK driving licence or evidence of an appropriate alternative.
• Excellent knowledge and clinical skills in General Adult Psychiatry.
• Ability to assess and manage complex clinical presentations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to work effectively within and lead a multidisciplinary team.
• Understanding of responsibilities under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
• Ability to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Experience of research or service evaluation.
• Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
• Ability to use and appraise clinical evidence.
• Basic IT skills, including email and internet use.

Desirable Experience

• Higher qualification in medical education, clinical research or management.
• Open Dialogue Training.
• Additional clinical qualifications.
• Broad specialist and subspecialist experience within the NHS or a comparable service.
• Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
• Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit or service improvement.
• Experience leading clinical audits resulting in service change or improved patient outcomes.
• Experience in data gathering and management.
• Ability to plan and deliver relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
