An opportunity is available for a Consultant Urologist to join an established and expanding regional urology service in the East of England.
The successful candidate will work as part of a large multidisciplinary urology team providing comprehensive general urological care across elective and emergency services, with opportunities to develop an appropriate subspecialist interest. The service operates across multiple acute sites and is undergoing continued development and transformation.
The department has considerable collective expertise across general urology, urological oncology, stone disease and endourology, prostate cancer diagnostics, female urology, voiding dysfunction, reconstruction and other specialist areas.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will:

• Provide comprehensive management of urology inpatients and outpatients across elective and emergency cases.
• Deliver general urological services in collaboration with Consultant Urologists and associated specialities.
• Support outpatient services, including LUTS, haematuria, prostate assessment and follow-up clinics.
• Undertake elective operating lists, including endoscopic and other urological procedures.
• Independently perform core diagnostic and therapeutic urology procedures.
• Manage urological emergencies and contribute to the on-call service.
• Contribute to reducing waiting lists across outpatient clinics and operating lists.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team working and service development.
• Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement and clinical governance.
• Maintain continuing professional development and participate in relevant education and training activities.

Working Pattern & Job Plan

The attached job description outlines a 10 PA job plan, comprising:

• 2.5 PA – Theatre
• 2 PA – Outpatient activity
• 1 PA – Diagnostics
• 0.5 PA – MDT
• 1.75 PA – Administration
• 0.8 PA – On-call
• 1.5 PA – SPA

This gives a total of 8.5 DCC PAs and 1.5 SPA PAs.
The current on-call commitment is 1 in 5 during weekdays, with no weekend on-call commitment associated with the attached post. The definitive job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate and reviewed as the service develops.

 

Person Specification

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Full GMC registration
• Specialist Register status
• FRCS (Urol) or equivalent
• Previous NHS experience
• Broad experience in inpatient and outpatient urological care
• Experience managing urological emergencies in an on-call setting
• Previous operative experience, including flexible cystoscopy
• Independence in core diagnostic and therapeutic urology procedures
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to delivering a high-quality urological service.
• Applicants from overseas must be able to demonstrate equivalence to the required UK speciality training and meet the Specialist Grade Generic Capabilities Framework requirements.

• Experience in teaching and training
• Research experience or peer-reviewed publications
• Specialist interest in an area of urology.

Professional Development & Training

The successful candidate will have access to mentoring and speciality support from experienced colleagues. The role includes participation in audit, quality improvement, research, clinical governance and continuing medical education. Doctors with a special interest will be supported to develop that interest where it aligns with departmental objectives.
