An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Breast Radiologist to join an established Breast Imaging team in South East England.

The successful candidate will provide specialist breast imaging across symptomatic, screening, surveillance and cross-sectional services, working alongside consultant breast radiologists, advanced practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary breast team.
The role combines specialist breast imaging with opportunities to contribute to teaching, audit, clinical governance, continuing professional development and service development. The department provides a comprehensive range of breast imaging and biopsy facilities, including digital breast tomosynthesis, vacuum-assisted excision and MRI-guided biopsy.


Main Duties

The successful candidate will:
  • Independently undertake Breast 1-stop symptomatic clinics.
  • Participate in Breast screening assessment clinics.
  • Report symptomatic and surveillance mammography.
  • Report Breast MRI.
  • Independently perform ultrasound-guided breast and axilla biopsies.
  • Perform stereotactic-guided breast and axilla biopsies.
  • Undertake stereotactic vacuum procedures, including VAB, VAE and localisation.
  • Work alongside breast surgeons to support pre-operative localisation using wire localisation and Magseed.
  • Participate in regular Breast MDT meetings.
  • Contribute to training and education within the Breast and Radiology departments.
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance and continuing medical education.
  • Contribute to service development and quality improvement.
  • Provide general radiology support as required, including plain-film and abdominal cross-sectional reporting, depending on previous experience.


Breast Imaging Service

The Breast Imaging Unit provides a comprehensive symptomatic and screening service, with dedicated breast imaging facilities.
The service includes:
  • Digital mammography and tomosynthesis
  • Stereotactic imaging and biopsy
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy and excision
  • MRI and MRI-guided biopsy
  • High-risk and moderate-risk breast screening
  • Symptomatic breast imaging
  • Breast screening assessment
  • Multidisciplinary breast cancer management

 

Person Specification

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of recognised subspecialist Breast Radiology training
  • Independent performance and reporting of symptomatic and screening breast imaging
  • Experience within the NHS National Breast Screening Programme
  • Independent stereotactic vacuum procedures
  • Independent work within Breast 1-stop symptomatic clinics
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance and audit
  • Evidence of audits resulting in changes to clinical practice
  • Effective communication and multidisciplinary working skills
  • Strong organisation and ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Initiative, resilience and adaptability
  • Strong problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills

Desirable:

  • CCT in Radiology
  • Publications in radiology journals

 

Key Requirements

  • FRCR or equivalent
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Specialist training in Breast Radiology, including at least 1 year of subspecialty training in a recognised centre
  • NHS experience, including experience working within the NHS National Breast Screening Programme
  • Independent reporting of symptomatic and screening breast imaging
  • Independent experience in breast and axilla ultrasound
  • Independent performance of ultrasound-guided and stereotactic-guided breast and axilla biopsies
  • Experience in Breast 1-stop symptomatic clinics
  • Independent stereotactic vacuum procedures, including VAB, VAE and localisation
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit
  • Evidence of radiology-specific audit leading to changes in practice
