An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join an expanding Gastroenterology department in North West England.
The successful candidate will join an established consultant team, delivering high-quality Gastroenterology services across inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopy settings. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated clinician to help develop services while providing outstanding patient-centred care within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.


Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver consultant-led Gastroenterology care across inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Manage patients on the dedicated Gastroenterology ward.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the JAG-accredited Endoscopy Unit.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative patient management.
  • Supervise and support junior doctors and trainees.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development.
  • Maintain CPD, appraisal and revalidation requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine (or within six months of CCT).

Desirable

  • Higher qualification in medical education, leadership or management.
  • Experience as an educational or clinical supervisor.
  • Evidence of leadership or management responsibilities.


Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Extensive experience in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine.
  • Independent management of acute and complex Gastroenterology patients.
  • Significant experience in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • JAG accreditation or evidence of working towards accreditation.
  • Experience participating in GI bleed or equivalent on-call rotas.
  • Strong communication and multidisciplinary team-working skills.
  • Experience in audit, clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Commitment to patient-centred care and continuous professional development.

Desirable

  • Specialist interest in one or more of the following:
    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
    • Hepatology
    • Clinical Nutrition
    • Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (EMR, ERCP or EUS)
    • GI Physiology or Functional Disorders.


Teaching, Research & Leadership

The successful candidate will have opportunities to:
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors and trainees.
  • Participate in endoscopy training and educational activities.
  • Contribute to audit, research and quality improvement projects.
  • Support service redesign and the future development of Gastroenterology services.
